It has made our sophomore English class much more fun and engaging this semester and will make our Spring Book Circles even more exciting. Having new books that kids get excited about makes helping often reluctant readers easier. Instead of dreading reading the same old curriculum, I get to see them enthusiastic about new Young Adult favourites and even getting interested in some modern classics. I've had more kids than ever before sign up for Fahrenheit 541 and Brave New World. We haven't even started reading yet, and I already hear them talking about which books they think will be the best—it's even got my freshmen classes excited to come back next year. \r\n\r\n Beyond the books, though, you also donated some pivotal art supplies for our dramatic poetry performances this Fall. Every year, my sophomores read the epic poem, Beowulf, to take a deep dive into poetry and explore how the poem tells the story of the English language. The masks you donated made their dramatic readings more immersive. The supplies also gave them a chance to demonstrate their understanding in a new medium, without relying on the traditional five-paragraph essay. You should see some of the awesome props and backdrops students made, even the ones who typically hide quietly in the back of the room. While studies show that engaging with visual media and art aids in knowledge retention and engagement, what most people don't realize is that high school classrooms like mine don't receive funding for art supplies. Without donations like yours, I would not be able to create meaningful lessons and projects like this one. \r\n\r\n As school budgets are slashed in these times, it often falls to teachers to fund our classrooms. I cannot always provide what I would like for my students. However, thanks to my community and even generous strangers, this year I can make learning a meaningful and memorable experience for at least 65 sophomores. Thank you.","fullyFundedDate":1755114472080,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-reading-through-novel-choice/9544613/","projectTitle":"Empowering Reading Through Novel Choice & Creative Book Clubs","teacherDisplayName":"Mx.
