These books have given my multilingual learners something incredibly important: access to stories that are both engaging and meaningful to them. We are using these texts to strengthen essential reading skills such as understanding character development, identifying conflict and theme, making predictions and inferences, analyzing how characters change, and supporting ideas with evidence from the text. Just as importantly, students are learning that strong literature can include characters, cultures, languages, and experiences that may feel familiar to their own. Books like Paola Santiago and the River of Tears, The Last Cuentista, The Marrow Thieves, Aru Shah and the End of Time, and Amari and the Night Brothers have helped us expand what students imagine when they think about who gets to be the hero of a story.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and social. Students spend time reading independently, but then they come together in book clubs to talk about what they noticed, ask questions, make predictions, discuss characters' choices, and compare interpretations. For multilingual learners, these conversations are especially valuable because students are developing their academic English while also developing their identities as readers. Having physical copies of the books means students can return to important passages, annotate, find evidence, and participate in conversations with the text right in front of them. Instead of reading being something students simply complete for an assignment, it becomes something they can explore together.\r\n\r\nOne of the most meaningful impacts has been seeing students become more willing to talk about books. Students who may initially be hesitant to participate often have much more to say when they connect with a character, recognize something from their culture, or discover a story that genuinely captures their attention. Those moments lead to richer conversations, stronger reading stamina, and greater confidence. My hope has always been for my students to see themselves not only as students learning English, but as thoughtful readers whose languages, cultures, ideas, and experiences are strengths they bring to our classroom. Your generosity has helped make that possible. Thank you for putting these books directly into my students' hands and helping us build a classroom where every reader has a story in which they can belong.","fullyFundedDate":1784245067294,"projectUrl":"project/book-club-books-for-multilingual-learner/10369506/","projectTitle":"Book Club Books for Multilingual Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Gustavo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10546195_orig.png?crop=941,941,x0,y260&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1783516227313","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10546195"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_70569","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":723,"numTeachers":60,"percentFrplEligible":64,"percentAsian":14,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":47,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":21,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":1,"percentMultiracialImputed":10,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"12.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":68.0,"schoolId":70569,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Shahala Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Shahala Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/evergreen-school-district-114/shahala-middle-school/70569"}
