If would probably mean I couldn't teach drywall installation. \r\n\r\nHaving six foot levels on hand to help frame walls, make sure joists are flat, or even just an amazing straight edge to scribe a line for cutting... it makes a huge difference in being a builder.\r\n\r\nWhen I started this program, I had to let the students use my six foot level because we didn't have one. Subs would come on site and instead of bringing their ladder with them, they would just grab mine or another carpenters. It was the worst, especially when time is money!\r\n\r\nNow that students have a variety and we have doubles of each, it's just changed the time use in the shop. One key aspect was helping students learn to keep track of their assignments. \r\n\r\nWith this project we were able to give all students a multi pocket folder that they could keep organized for all of their classes. They are able to go into the sensory room with the overhead lights turned off and enjoy the lights streaming through the bubble tube, the fiber optic cables and on the walls. Some students complete learning activities in that setting while others take a break and return to class once they feel relaxed and comfortable. \r\n\r\nThe materials also included vibrating cushions and mat. We were able to connect the vibrating heated mat to a switch system so that our medically fragile students learned to use a switch to activate it. We placed the mat on their side or under them on the wheelchair or table and then they could make it go with a switch. One student took particular delight in using the switch to feel the vibrations. That is because of the support of donors like you who have been lifting us up and providing all the tools we need to make this a legit building program. \r\n\r\nAttendance has stayed strong after two months back in class, which is just awesome to see. \r\n\r\nI have been working on the backend trying to secure a long term consumable donor and with a couple other groups to help potentially purchase tools we would use to create a second program that could train an additional 50 students a year, bringing us up to 100 in the city of Seattle.\r\n\r\nWe couldn't think about that without your support!
