I'm so grateful to not have to go out and spend my own money to support the basic supplies my students need in classes nor do I have to ask them to go buy the supplies themselves. This is a massive weight off my shoulders and allows me to focus on teaching and helping students collaborate.\r\nThere are so many supplies that students use. The colored paper has helped highlight students' different tests, readings, and other designations of projects in the classroom visually, supporting students to find their way without having to read extra, speeding up our ability to find groups and learn instead of trying to find everyone. Almost every day a student asks me for a band aid and I'm ready! This allows students to get back to work and be seen in class instead of missing important instructional time by going down multiple floors to the nurse's office. Finally, the colored markers help students express their learning and individualism with color. It also allows teachers to coordinate color communication when they teacher multiple classes, allowing clearer understanding for students.\r\nThe most exciting project we've done recently is the Puget Sound food webs with our students learning science and English at the same time. It is clear to see how students have collaborated and discussed together all their ideas. It is amazing to observe students discussing and modifying ideas in real time.\r\nI am so grateful for these supplies that allow my students to be seen and collaborate in class together. As a teacher at a Title 1 school, I'm often scrambling to find resources and activities that my students can participate in that are meaningful and exciting like their peers at schools with more money. In addition, many families are experiencing significant financial hardships, and being able to tell them we have science notebooks for them is a huge weight off their shoulders to support their children in school. While a notebook seems like a simple supply, being able to give them to students to support them makes a massive difference in my day-to-day classroom.\r\nEvery day, students use their notebooks in class. They use it to make observations, record notes, and reflect on the previous day's learning. They are being challenged in their responsibilities to bring their notebook everyday as part of their journey in science. Just yesterday in class, students were using their notebooks and notes to complete assignments that had them studying and preparing for their first big chemistry test in less than a week. Students were able to find all the key information to review and be reminded of their labs for the unit. Additionally, students can share their notebooks to support their peers who were absent, allowing the students to be the expert and teacher for their peers. The students have gained so much confidence in having a place to look for the answers they need both inside and outside of class, and it allows them to decrease their stress and really learn the science in the classroom. \r\nThe day we brought out the notebooks, students were so excited and relieved. They got to select a color for their notebook, and they visibly relaxed to not have to find the money with their families to budget for another school supply or go to the store another time. They were able to decorate the front and inside of their notebooks with drawings or left them blank and the color the selected shining bright. The notebooks are holding up extremely well as opposed to the cheaper notebooks teachers have personally struggled to buy in the past, and it helps students feel like they have real ownership of the material. Just last week students colored a periodic table in chemistry and added it to the front table of contents, and they are constantly using the periodic table and reviewing their notes with it. In environmental science, students are adding the nitrogen cycle with color to use as a continued reference as we discuss soil health at the beginning of our second unit. \r\nAgain I, and my students, are so grateful for supplies that allow their intelligence to shine and remove barriers for success. We just started our 2nd year of Chess Club and turnout has been higher each week. We now have more students coming for the club than ever before. Additionally, it looks like we will be able to put together a real team this year to start playing the Seattle Metro league later in December. \r\n\r\nThis project funded some training books to help our team out, the notation pads needed to train how to write down their games (part of the rules/great for training after), and tournament bags so we look professional when the team arrives to the hall. \r\n\r\nI cannot wait to show all the club members when they arrive tomorrow for our meeting. As a carpenter, the tools you use mean something. You take pride in them, take care of them, and it helps your mental state knowing you have something you can be proud of. It's no difference here. I can see them get excited for a little something to break up the day. \r\n\r\nOur summer class worked on a special project that will help train students for many years to come. They framed up the walls of a house and helped get the rafters up, along with plywood and framed in windows and doors! All in 3 and a half weeks with 14-17 year old's!
