It was, to put it in sporting terms, a big winner. The book appealed to lots of different kinds of students in different ways. One way to look at it was by the composition of the self-selected Socratic seminar groups. \r\n\r\nAfter reading and annotating on their own and coming up with questions regarding the most recent reading, students got into their discussion groups and let the questions fly. At one point in class, a large group of boys who all play basketball or soccer were having a spirited debate about the protagonist's relationship with his teammates, and whether they were healthy. A group of high-achieving girls was wrapped in a deep questioning of the ethics of three characters – Tre was interested in Khiana. Khiana seemed interested in Tre. Khiana surprisingly \"friend zoned\" Tre, then started a relationship with Tre's best friend, Wes. The drama! The best part was hearing the girls lament the quality of the author's prose, then curse him for drawing them in to this love triangle drama, then forgive him as it was his first novel. Bless them. The next most enjoyable moment for me was to hear these two groups trade topics. The boys took Tre and Wes and Khiana to task, and the girls explored the basketball team culture. These moments are just a snippet of the high-level discourse our 8th graders were involved in. I thought I was listening to a college seminar class.\r\n \r\nI know a book is good when I hear such conversations, and I know it makes a difference to individual kids when I read what they write about it in their journals. At least 5 or 6 (I should say 6 or 7 to stay current) wrote that it was one of the most enjoyable books they've read. Some said it was one of the only books they've actually read. Several of them thanked me for choosing it. Which means they're thanking you for making it possible for everyone to read it together. It's a good book. But what made it a great book was that everyone had their own copy to keep. That allowed me to assign and read their annotations, which all but ensured that everyone kept up with the reading and read fairly deeply, or deeper than they would have otherwise. And writing their own discussion questions got everyone somewhat invested in the discussion before it started. Because of all this, they were able to experience the book, and engage in literary conversation, at a level that I would guess is unusual at this age. So, donor, you did that. Well done! And thank you!","fullyFundedDate":1764631230074,"projectUrl":"project/books-basketball-and-belonging-in-eigh/9814639/","projectTitle":"Books, Basketball, and Belonging in Eighth Grade ELA","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Jeff","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10307588"},{"teacherId":228416,"projectId":9270301,"letterContent":"Whew!!!! Sorry it took so long - we finally were able to start using our amazing new MakeyMakey sets this week, and we are so excited about them! Today, we learned all about what a MakeyMakey is (a way to turn everyday objects into a working electrical circuit), and we held a search of materials around the room to determine which of them are conductive. So far, we think that tin foil is conductive, along with metal nails, play dough, even our own bodies. We are going to choose one of these materials to create our own Flappy Bird controllers.
