With your support, I was able to purchase multiple copies of all 6 transitional chapter books nominated for the 2026 Washington Library Association Otter Award. I prepared special display bins for the books, along with stickers of the book covers and book review cards that students can use to track their reading. I introduced transitional chapter books as important practice for readers interested in moving from picture books and graphic novels to longer chapter books and novels. After I \"book talked\" all the titles, students began checking them out and reading them right away! \r\nI quickly discovered that 5 copies of each book was not enough supply for the demand, so I used some funds provided by our school's PTSA to purchase even more copies. It was helpful learning for next year's program. Students are still eager to get their hands on the books, so I do have a lengthy Holds list, but students are being patient and orderly as they wait in anticipation for each new story. During library visits, we've also listened to read-alouds of excerpts from the books and played team trivia games to practice asking and answering questions about books we read. \r\nNext steps for this program include collaborating with the third grade teachers to use these books to support their reading curriculum and helping students meet grade-level reading standards. Overall, our third graders seem to really enjoy having a special reading challenge just for them, and they have already been sharing their favorite moments and characters from these award-nominated books. In the spring, they will submit their official vote for which of the 6 books they think deserves the 2026 WLA Otter Award.\r\nThank you for your generous donations and support! The cookbooks arrived, and I previewed them with students last week. I wish you could have seen their excitement! It was clear that many students felt seen when they finally got the chance to read a cookbook with foods from their cultures. And even if they didn't feel a connection to their own specific cultures, they were happy to be reading about food and learning about cultures from all over the world. \r\nStudents chose from a menu of activities to support their exploration of the cookbooks. Some students copied down recipes to try at home and others compared two of their favorite dishes using a Venn diagram. They read with partners, made illustrations, and several students commented that they couldn't wait to check out a cookbook to show their parents. I witnessed one student from Ukraine light up and talk about his home country in a way I rarely get to experience with him. It was wonderful!\r\nI also heard from several students who wanted to know when I planned to get more cookbooks specifically about their favorite cultural cuisines. I told them that while this project was a good start, I did plan to continue bringing their cultures into our library. We started a wish list with ideas for cookbooks from a variety of not yet represented countries and cultures, and I plan to add these titles to our collection as soon as possible.
