Students are learning to choose an icon or spell on a keyboard in order to communicate their wants, needs, thoughts and academic responses. Just having a fun writing tool can help ease the pressure they feel and it looks so cool! \r\n\r\nThe Purble is a great tool for students who need help regulating. They hold it and help it get its heart rate down and it calms them at the same time. Students gathered around the boxes, pointing out games they recognized and asking how to play the ones that were new to them. For many, this was their very first time seeing or holding these kinds of games, and the joy on their faces said it all.\r\n\r\nWe've already started using them during indoor recess (which, in Washington, is quite often!). One memorable moment was watching a group of fourth graders teach a game to a pair of first graders. They not only explained the rules but encouraged them through each turn—demonstrating teamwork, patience, and kindness without any prompting from adults. These moments of cooperative play are exactly what we hoped for when we dreamed up this project.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to create a school-wide \"Game Leaders\" program where older students will help facilitate and rotate the games during indoor recess. This will allow more students to learn new games, build leadership skills, and create connections across grade levels. We have some future art projects planned using the canvases and paints as well. \r\n\r\nStudents are learning about colors and shapes and we will use what we are learning to create more art. it is fun to mix primary colors, learn about contrasting, and also allow some free creativity to flow. They are also experiencing how to work through challenges when things don't turn out how they planned.
