For many of my students, it was the first time they came across a protagonist who was struggling with some of the same challenges they face. For others, it was the first time they took the perspective of someone with those difficulties. As a result, we had empowering, moving discussions about what it means to be a human and how we can treat others with utmost respect. My students, and myself, have walked away more empathetic towards one another.
