Our school currently utilizes the free Open Sci Ed curriculum, which is web based and relies heavily upon slideshows and article handouts with very little opportunity for hands-on science exploration. The microscopes offer an exciting opportunity to view the physical world, literally through the lens of a scientist, rather than simply a YouTube video. The students have really enjoyed using them and have acquired a better understanding of how life exists on a molecular level that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The microscopes have definitely piqued interest in science and will contribute towards their success on the summative end-of-year 5th grade science assessment. Undoubtedly, your kind donation has expanded their understanding of the wonders of our natural world. Hopefully this exposure will inspire some of them to pursue STEM careers. As you know, most of the books ordered were chapter books ranging from the easiest Lexile, which include Junie B. Jones and Magic Treehouse, up to higher Lexile text such as Percy Jackson. In September, we had about 12 Diary of a Wimpy Kid books and the students gravitated towards those, but I have been gradually removing and channeling them to a third grade classroom. At this point, the easiest books are the Minecraft graphic novels, which are more challenging than Wimpy Kid, and the students are beginning to explore the new library. They are reading them during free time and borrowing them and taking them home for the weekend. Our class has become more literate thanks to you! The games and materials are already being used by my fifth graders, especially the fraction board game and the multiplication and division War card games.
