Your generous gift — and the caring support of our alum donor — has made a real, tangible difference for students at Ocean Lakes High School. Because of you, our makerspace is not just a place with machines; it's a place where confidence, curiosity, and creativity grow.\r\n\r\nWhen we opened our makerspace with a single DonorsChoose printer in 2019, we hoped it would spark student imagination. Today we have seven 3D printers, including a new Bambu model, and your donation allowed us to take an important next step: purchasing a filament dehydrator and the finishing tools and supplies students need to turn ideas into lasting work.\r\n\r\nThose items may sound small on a list, but to our students they're everything. Summers in schools often mean the air conditioning is cut back or turned off; that environment is less than ideal for filament storage. The dehydrator brings old filament back to life so students aren't stopped by brittle or unusable spools. The glue, sanding tools, and finishing supplies let young makers move beyond rough prototypes to polished pieces they can be proud of. I've watched students' faces light up when a print they designed becomes something they can hold, gift, or use — and your support makes those moments possible.\r\n\r\nOur makerspace is built on access and belonging. We offer self‑paced and in‑person orientations so every student and staff member can learn to run a print — no CAD course required. Once trained, they can schedule time independently for class projects, hobby work, replacement parts, or anything their imagination calls for. As a specialist, I work alongside teachers to weave 3D design into lessons across art, culinary, STEM, and resource classes so hands-on making strengthens classroom learning.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, students are learning more than how to design: they're learning patience, problem-solving, repair, and pride in craftsmanship. Your gift stretches our resources, reduces waste by revitalizing filament, and helps students finish projects they might otherwise abandon. Those finished projects become proof to students that their ideas matter and that they can bring them into the world.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in equitable access and for investing in our students' growth. Your generosity fuels creativity and builds skills that will stay with these learners long after they leave our halls.","fullyFundedDate":1759083303412,"projectUrl":"project/ensure-equitable-access-to-3d-printers/9717587/","projectTitle":"Ensure Equitable Access to 3D Printers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Riddick","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4309594_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1489426730030","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/olhshelpdesk"},{"teacherId":4309594,"projectId":9373590,"letterContent":"Thank you for supporting our project, Provide Essential Tools To Support 3D Design. Your generous gift is already making a meaningful difference in our students' learning.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support we can now give students the basic, high‑quality tools they need to learn 3D modeling the right way — graphing paper, pencils, erasers, and a full set of measuring tools. These seemingly small items remove a major barrier: until now students have had to share four rulers and sketch on ordinary notebook paper or scrap paper, which makes creating precise front/top/side views difficult. With proper graph paper and measuring tools, students can measure accurately, sketch thoughtfully, and transfer those exact dimensions into CAD programs like Tinkercad.\r\n\r\nWhat this means for our students\r\n\r\n- Stronger foundational skills: Beginners learn the step‑by‑step process of measuring an object and creating front, top, and side sketches — a vital habit for reliable CAD modeling.\r\n- Deeper, more complex projects: Students with prior experience gain a methodical workflow that lets them design more intricate models with confidence.\r\n- More equitable access: The library makerspace offers all students access to 3D printers without needing a formal CAD course. Your donation lets us add guided 3D design activities in the makerspace so students who come to print can also learn to create original models.\r\n- A quick classroom example: in a recent 3D approaches to art lesson, students carefully measured and sketched a paper towel roll from three views, then built that object in Tinkercad. The difference in student outcomes was immediate — more accurate digital models, fewer trial prints, and a clearer understanding of spatial relationships.\r\n\r\nOur next steps (and continued impact) with the supplies you funded, include a plan to:\r\n\r\n- Equip small groups for hands‑on measurement and sketching activities.\r\n- Integrate short 3D design lessons into the library makerspace so any student who completes orientation can learn to design as well as print.\r\n- Reduce wasted print time and materials by improving students' design accuracy before they send files to the printer.\r\n\r\nThank you again for helping us give students the tools and skills to design, create, and innovate.","fullyFundedDate":1757550996638,"projectUrl":"project/provide-essential-tools-to-support-3d-de/9373590/","projectTitle":"Provide Essential Tools To Support 3D Design","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Riddick","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4309594_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1489426730030","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/olhshelpdesk"},{"teacherId":6655865,"projectId":9156226,"letterContent":"Thanks to this DonorsChoose project, my classroom is now better equipped to support students who are deaf and hard of hearing with multiple disabilities. The stand-up mobile desk has made it much easier for me to move around the room and provide individualized support wherever students are working. This flexibility has improved engagement and allowed me to give real-time assistance during lessons, helping each student stay focused and involved in their learning.\r\n\r\nThe cosmetology and construction books have also made a tremendous difference by helping students build the vocabulary and background knowledge they need for success in their vocational training classes. These books connect classroom learning to real-world career paths, encouraging students to explore their interests while strengthening language and comprehension skills. Together, these resources have created a more dynamic and accessible learning environment that better prepares students for both academic and vocational success.","fullyFundedDate":1742940975813,"projectUrl":"project/technical-education-books-and-portable-w/9156226/","projectTitle":"Technical Education Books and Portable Work Station!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Elizabeth","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6655865_orig.jpg?crop=720,720,x147,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1590634540260","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6655865"},{"teacherId":6655865,"projectId":9305220,"letterContent":"The resources funded through my DonorsChoose project have made a significant impact on my students who are deaf and hard of hearing with multiple disabilities. The occupation and career picture cards and photo conversation cards have become powerful visual tools that help students make real-world connections and expand their understanding of different roles within the community. These visuals have supported vocabulary development, increased engagement during language lessons, and provided meaningful opportunities for students to practice expressive and receptive communication skills in a way that feels relevant and accessible.\r\n\r\nThe social-emotional learning games, emotion cards, and emotions flash cards have been instrumental in helping students recognize, label, and appropriately express their feelings. Many of my students face challenges with emotional regulation and self-expression, and these materials have made it easier to introduce and reinforce these essential life skills through visual supports and interactive play. Students are now more confident in identifying their own emotions and those of others, which has led to improved communication and stronger peer interactions.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, the sequencing cards for storytelling and highlighters have enriched literacy and language instruction by making abstract concepts more concrete. Students use the sequencing cards to organize events, retell stories, and practice narrative structure—skills that are often difficult for learners with communication challenges. The highlighters have helped students visually identify key vocabulary and important details, supporting comprehension and focus. Overall, these materials have created a more inclusive, engaging, and visually supportive learning environment, empowering my students to build communication, emotional, and academic skills that extend beyond the classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1746476564519,"projectUrl":"project/educational-cards-games-supplies/9305220/","projectTitle":"Educational Cards, Games, Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Elizabeth","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6655865_orig.jpg?crop=720,720,x147,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1590634540260","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6655865"},{"teacherId":7962882,"projectId":9090559,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your incredible generosity in supporting our Deaf and Hard of Hearing classroom. It's important to us to provide equitable access to the printers in our building. Your kind donation provided us with the components to protect printer filament from humidity. The vaccum kit, desiccants, and bags will help prolong the life of our filament, and the wire cutters allow our users to clip filament for proper loading. In order to have a steady stream of supplies for our users, we have to write grants and ask for donations in advance of our needs. These supplies help us plan ahead and store and load filament properly.\r\n\r\nThe filament is such an important part of the 3D design and prototyping process. Filament is melted to form the 3D print jobs, so your supplies are essential to our program's success. Students use the 3D printers to print original designs to support their hobbies and to print robot and machine parts for their senior projects. More recently, 3D Approaches to Art students have designed various artistic objects in Tinkercad and then been able to print their designs to see concrete representation of their creativity and design.\r\n\r\nWe also have a quite a few students who use our printers to explore a new passion of theirs. They begin by using the 3D printers to print others' designs. Then, they get into 3D design programs (like Tinkercad) to create their own designs and begin the prototyping process. One of the things that is great about 3D design and printing is that it teaches students to persevere. Often, a 3D design doesn't print as planned the first time. Students learn to adjust calculations, redesign, and, sometimes, break out the crazy glue to make their design come to fruition. Thank you again for allowing our students to have access to 3D printers in our school's library.","fullyFundedDate":1732285426468,"projectUrl":"project/provide-resources-to-support-a-school-wi/8738437/","projectTitle":"Provide Resources to Support a School Wide 3D Printer Program","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Riddick","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4309594_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1489426730030","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/olhshelpdesk"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_61486","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1839,"numTeachers":125,"percentFrplEligible":54,"percentAsian":11,"percentBlack":11,"percentWhite":54,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":11,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":71.8,"schoolId":61486,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Ocean Lakes High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Ocean Lakes High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/virginia-beach-city-public-schools/ocean-lakes-high-school/61486"}
