When the sensory drums arrived, my students were immediately excited to see them and could not wait to try them out. Watching their faces light up as they explored the different sounds and rhythms was truly special. What began as a donation has quickly become an important part of our daily routine and a tool my students genuinely enjoy using.\r\nOur block schedule can feel like a very long time for students who experience challenges with attention, anxiety, sensory regulation, and managing big emotions. The drums have given my students a positive and structured way to take a break, reset, and regulate when they begin to feel overwhelmed. Instead of leaving the classroom or becoming increasingly frustrated, students can use the drums to release some of that energy, settle their bodies, and refocus. I have seen students who were struggling become calmer after spending a few minutes with the drums. Most importantly, they are learning to recognize when they need a reset and are beginning to use the drums as a tool to help themselves return to learning.\r\nThe impact has gone beyond simply helping students get through a long class period. We are seeing more opportunities for students to remain in the classroom, re-engage with their work, and experience success. The drums have helped make our classroom a place where students know that it is okay to need a moment to regulate and that they have a safe, positive way to do so.\r\nThank you for thinking of our students and for understanding the challenges our teachers and students face. Knowing that someone in our own Roanoke community believes in them means so much. Your generosity has brought smiles, laughter, and a new sense of calm into our classroom. Most importantly, you have given my students another tool to help them persevere, reset, and try again.\r\nThank you for helping my students thrive!","fullyFundedDate":1778458343786,"projectUrl":"project/creating-calm-a-sensory-space-for-stude/10251455/","projectTitle":"Creating Calm: A Sensory Space for Student Self-Regulation","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Walker","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1562794_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1698328263829","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1562794"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_35002","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":643,"numTeachers":32,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":35,"percentWhite":40,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":4,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"20.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":69.1,"schoolId":35002,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Woodrow Wilson Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Woodrow Wilson Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/roanoke-city-public-schools/woodrow-wilson-middle-school/35002"}
