In reading, students summarized Peter Pan, analyzed the development of the story, and identified figurative language while explaining how it contributed to the plot and characters. They also wrote book reviews of Peter Pan and applied computational thinking to organize and expand their ideas in a logical way.\r\n\r\nStudents also integrated computer science and STEM through activities connected to A Tale of Despereaux. Using the Scratch program, students created a \"Despereaux Escape\" project where they designed algorithms for escaping the dungeon, finding the princess, and navigating the castle. These activities helped students understand sequencing, problem-solving, and logical thinking while making literature more interactive and engaging.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were extremely excited because many of the resources and concepts were completely new to them. Although STEM and computer science were unfamiliar at first, students were eager and enthusiastic to learn. They especially enjoyed exploring hands-on materials such as the Wooden Hexagon Puzzle, Wacky Tacky Links, and Wooden Tangram Puzzle. Students were also fascinated by the book How To Be A Coder, which helped them begin thinking like coders and introduced them to fun and creative coding activities they could build on the computer themselves.\r\n\r\nThe next steps students will continue to connect literacy with computer science concepts. Students will explain Peter Pan while making historical connections supported with evidence from the text. They will also practice debugging and refining algorithms by revising and improving their written work. Students will strengthen their book reviews by treating their writing like computer code—checking for errors, identifying weaknesses, and revising their paragraphs to better achieve their purpose of convincing the reader. As part of this activity, students will write Peter Pan's step-by-step plan to escape Captain Hook as an algorithm, identify mistakes Peter Pan made that reflect the process of debugging, and incorporate computer science vocabulary throughout their writing.","fullyFundedDate":1766544737160,"projectUrl":"project/level-up-stem-learning/9969254/","projectTitle":"Level Up STEM Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Godley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9337379_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720631026923","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9337379"},{"teacherId":10274816,"projectId":9890024,"letterContent":"The calming items that were received have had a positive impact on students by helping them better manage their emotions and behaviors throughout the school day. As a result, many students have shown improvement in their ability to refocus and return to classroom activities with less disruption.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the calming items have helped create a more supportive and comforting learning environment for students. The games and activity materials have also been a wonderful addition, giving students positive opportunities to build teamwork, practice social skills, and enjoy structured play during breaks and reward times.\r\n\r\nThanks to your support, our classroom continues to be a welcoming space where students feel cared for and prepared to succeed.
