After experiencing the COVID shut down period and its effects upon education, we turned our attention heavily upon the social emotional health of our students. As a result, and being a Gifted Resource Teacher, I began using mystery puzzles as a strategy to help my 6th grade students strengthen their interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. I intentionally choose mystery puzzles that are between 750-1000 pieces to provide rigor and intensity while challenging the students' ability to solve the mystery while building the puzzle. However, it became such a challenge to sort pieces and to store the puzzles at the end of each class that would allow students to return later and pick up where they left off. I soon realized that we needed puzzle tables and that's where Donors Choose came into the picture. I never thought that my project would be funded although I knew teachers who had projects funded, I thought that no one would think that \"Mystery Puzzles\" were worthwhile. When I received the notice that my project had been funded, I absolutely lost it! I went straight to my computer to email my team, administrator, and my coordinator to let them know. But the greatest excitement came when I was able to share the news with my students! The students were so excited and wanted to start immediately. Unfortunately, I had to wait until I could purchase new puzzles so that we could begin. Once that was done, the fun and the work began! \r\n\r\nThe students are grouped and then given the opportunity to select their puzzle. Once they have their puzzle in hand, they quickly decide on a team strategy for completing the task. They were so excited to get started and to begin using the tables. They are now able to use the table drawers to sort and easily pull the pieces as needed. One of the most powerful takeaways from this activity is hearing the students have meaningful conversations about strategizing and how they learn to work as a team toward a common goal. They also learn their strengths and weaknesses and learn to show compassion for each other. They are so happy to not have to start from the beginning every time they work on their puzzles thanks to the tables and the drawers. They also love being able to move the tables on the swivel. They feel so professional and love the time to relax their minds while still being challenged. They are usually allowed to work on the puzzles after the lesson for the day and they can't wait to get started.\r\n\r\nWhile this may seem to some as a trivial activity, my students will never forget the experience and when surveyed, they shared that this activity was one that they will never forget because they learn so much about each other and they also learn how to deal with their frustration levels when they are unable to quickly solve a problem. Thank you so much for funding this project and for your contribution to educational success. This is an awesome inclusion activity that everyone can enjoy. Thank you. Thank you.
