I set up for the surprise by having students annotate a Valentine's Day poem. The theme of the poem was that being kind to, and caring for, others is the true meaning of Valentine's Day. The poem highlighted how little acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone's day.\r\n\r\nThanks to YOU and your act of kindness, my students had a fantastic Valentine's Day surprise! They were SO excited to learn they would be able to select a book of their own from the Poppy series. Even though it has been a few months since we read the book as a class, they were just excited about the characters! \r\n\r\nTheir choices were: Poppy & Ragweed - the prequel to the book we read as a class, which highlights Ragweed, who died right at the start of our class novel; Poppy & Rye - the book after our class novel, which dives into Poppy's life married to Ragweed's brother, Rye; Poppy & Ereth - a later book in the series, but includes a class favorite character, the humorous porcupine, Ereth.\r\n\r\nThe favorite choice seemed to be Poppy & Rye, as they're all about the drama of Poppy marrying her deceased boyfriend's brother (scandalous!). Even if students didn't secure their first choice out of the options, I have encouraged them to \"tradesies\" once they finish their first read. There are plenty of copies of each book floating around that they can swap with someone else to read another one of the books!\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generous donation. It is so great to see so many students EXCITED about reading! I'm looking forward to hearing their conversations about these new books!","fullyFundedDate":1763048556964,"projectUrl":"project/winter-break-reading-challenge/9884349/","projectTitle":"Winter Break Reading Challenge","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Atherton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10346231_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1762608924303","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10346231"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_34008","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":840,"numTeachers":65,"percentFrplEligible":68,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":11,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":70,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"5 - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"12.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":51.4,"schoolId":34008,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Mayfield Intermediate School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Mayfield Intermediate School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/manassas-city-school-district/mayfield-intermediate-school/34008"}
