My students were absolutely thrilled to receive these books. Our class has started the Poppy series of books and all students were hooked! They couldn't wait to dive into reading, which is exactly what I want to see as their reading teacher!\r\n\r\nAt the beginning of the year, many students come to my classroom and have not enjoyed reading. I always tell them that they just need to find the right books. Once I can help them find books they love, they want to read and do it more often. This improves their reading skills! I always tell them that reading is like playing sports...the more they do it, the better they will get at it. These books, Poppy and Poppy and Rye, will not only help students love reading, but become better readers as well.\r\n\r\nAs I mentioned in the introduction to my project, many of my students come from lower income families and families where parents work multiple jobs. many kids at my school don't have access to lots of great books. By donating to my project, you have really made a difference for my students. Due to your kind donation, over 20 students, both boys and girls, were able to join this afterschool club for free. Each club member received a loom, needle, hook, yarn and knitting directions. The smiles on their faces were pure joy when they were presented with their knitting supplies!!! They are so grateful and excited to learn a new skill. \r\n\r\nEach knitting member will knit two hats during the club; one to keep and one to donate. I wish you could have heard their reaction when I told them that they will get to keep the looms after the knitting club ends! I set up for the surprise by having students annotate a Valentine's Day poem. The theme of the poem was that being kind to, and caring for, others is the true meaning of Valentine's Day. The poem highlighted how little acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone's day.\r\n\r\nThanks to YOU and your act of kindness, my students had a fantastic Valentine's Day surprise! They were SO excited to learn they would be able to select a book of their own from the Poppy series. Even though it has been a few months since we read the book as a class, they were just excited about the characters! \r\n\r\nTheir choices were: Poppy & Ragweed - the prequel to the book we read as a class, which highlights Ragweed, who died right at the start of our class novel; Poppy & Rye - the book after our class novel, which dives into Poppy's life married to Ragweed's brother, Rye; Poppy & Ereth - a later book in the series, but includes a class favorite character, the humorous porcupine, Ereth.\r\n\r\nThe favorite choice seemed to be Poppy & Rye, as they're all about the drama of Poppy marrying her deceased boyfriend's brother (scandalous!). Even if students didn't secure their first choice out of the options, I have encouraged them to \"tradesies\" once they finish their first read. There are plenty of copies of each book floating around that they can swap with someone else to read another one of the books!\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generous donation. It is so great to see so many students EXCITED about reading!
