Your generosity has given my sixth-grade ELA students access to a wider variety of books and more opportunities to find texts that genuinely interest them.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading looks different depending on the purpose. Students read independently to build fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and stamina, while also practicing skills such as identifying main ideas, making inferences, analyzing characters, and connecting ideas across a text. The new books give students opportunities to practice these skills with texts they are actually excited to read.\r\n\r\nMy students were especially excited when the new books arrived, and the graphic novels have been a particular favorite. They have helped make reading feel more accessible and engaging for students who may not always be eager to pick up a traditional chapter book. Students are able to choose books based on their interests and read at their own pace during independent reading time.\r\n\r\nThe books will also have an impact beyond our regular ELA classroom. Some of the new titles will be used by our Storyteller Studio, a student club where students practice reading aloud and recording stories for younger children to enjoy.
