Each day we have at least 2-3 students who come to school extremely hungry and constantly asking for food. While our school is able to provide breakfast ad lunch for our students, it is hardly enough to satisfy a typical elementary student, much less a 200 pound high schooler. In addition, our school lacks a PTA or outside organizations who may be willing to supply items necessary for the nourishment of our stiudents. Donors Choose has provided an opportunity to supply the snacks to supplement the meals which are served at school. \r\nFor the past couple of months, we have been able to put a smile on the faces of our students by issuing food that we received as a result of our generous donors. The students have been very appreciative and surprised at the fact that strangers are willing to supply their basic needs. My appreciation for Donors Choose goes far beyond words. In the times that we live in, it is heartwarming to find people who are willing to pour their personal resources into strangers with 'no strings attached'. Our students were overjoyed at the thought that complete strangers cared about their well-being and were willing to supply them with snacks to help them through the day. As I stated in my application, many of our students choose to come to school primarily to get breakfast and lunch and their hunger often interferes with their desire to learn.\r\n Bridgeport Academy is an alternative school and our students have either been suspended long-term or are facing community charges. We often deal with students who have been placed in foster care or are living with extended family members and the meals supplied at school are insufficient for their age. A slice of pizza, a fruit cup, and a milk will not come close to filling the stomach of a teen-ager who relies on that meal from day-to-day.
