With additional support from grants through Fun and Function and SEPTA, we have been able to add mirrors and sensory materials that fill out the space and give students more ways to move, play, and regulate their emotions.\r\n\r\nEach time a new material was introduced, students responded with excitement, interaction, and skills we had not seen before. One student began labeling \"jumping\" while bouncing on the new sensory boards, while others creatively constructed houses using the floor tiles. Students enjoy touching the sensory animals and matching their colors to different emotions, reinforcing the concepts we teach through the Zones of Regulation framework. The space also gives students opportunities to practice sharing, turn-taking, imitation, communication, and collaborative play.\r\n\r\nThe sensory space is especially valuable as an indoor recess option when weather prevents us from going outside. Because students in our preschool autism class do not leave the classroom for specials or meals, having another engaging environment for movement and exploration makes a tremendous difference in their day. Students across multiple grade levels also use the room as a fun, comforting place to regulate and prepare themselves to return to learning.\r\n\r\nThe space is still growing. Our next steps include installing shelves for sensory lighting and continuing to add materials to the remaining wall space.
