Many students come into history and literacy activities expecting dense, text-heavy material, but these graphic nonfiction books immediately lower that barrier. By combining visuals with well-researched content, students are able to build comprehension skills such as identifying key events, analyzing cause and effect, and understanding historical perspectives in a much more approachable way.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become more interactive and engaging because of these texts. Instead of passively reading, students are pointing out visual details, making predictions based on illustrations, and connecting images to written information. This has led to stronger discussions and better retention of content. The format also naturally supports visual literacy, helping students interpret symbolism, tone, and sequencing: skills that are essential not just in history, but across all subjects.\r\n\r\nThank you again for helping make learning more accessible, engaging, and meaningful for my students. Even more importantly, these stories reflect a wide range of identities and experiences, allowing students to see themselves in literature while also building empathy and understanding for others.\r\n\r\nThese books won't just benefit one class or one group of students. Seniors often struggle with motivation for repetitive online practice, especially when they already know they are close to graduation. Having a clear, immediate reward for staying on task helped create a much more focused and productive atmosphere.\r\n\r\nStudents quickly understood that the snacks were not automatic, but earned through completing their required ALEKS math practice and CommonLit reading work. Because of this, I saw more students staying engaged for the full study period instead of drifting off task. Several students who previously struggled to complete their weekly math minutes began consistently meeting their goals.\r\n\r\nThe incentives also helped reinforce a culture of accountability. Students reminded each other about their progress, checked their minutes, and encouraged their classmates to stay focused so they could earn the reward together. What started as a simple motivator turned into a small but effective system that supported positive habits during an otherwise challenging part of the school day.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, the project helped remove a financial burden from me personally. I had been purchasing these incentives out of pocket in order to keep the system fair and consistent for all students. Because of donor support, I was able to continue offering the same positive reinforcement without worrying about the cost.\r\n\r\nI am incredibly grateful to the donors who supported this project. Even though the LEGO Mona Lisa set has not arrived yet, the news that we will have such a special grand prize has already made a huge impact on my students. When I told them what the prize would be, the room immediately filled with excitement and disbelief. Several students looked up the set online and started talking about how many tiny bricks it contains, what the final piece looks like, and how amazing it would feel to win something connected to both art and engineering.\r\n\r\nRight now, students are beginning early brainstorming for their spring art projects. Knowing a prize like this is waiting for them has inspired many of them to think bigger and challenge themselves. One student who usually prefers simple projects has already begun exploring more detailed ideas because, in his words, \"If that Mona Lisa is the prize, I want to actually earn it.\" Another student said she plans to experiment with techniques she's been nervous to try because the opportunity \"feels too cool to play it safe.\"\r\n\r\nThe accompanying book, Meet Leonardo da Vinci, has also helped set the stage for our next unit. Even without the prize in hand yet, the materials have given us a chance to talk about Renaissance innovation, creative problem-solving, and how artists across history push boundaries—just like our students do. The anticipation alone has motivated them to take their planning more seriously and see their artwork as part of something bigger.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving our students something to look forward to and work toward. The new technology and creative prizes you funded have already made a huge impact on our students. Many of them use digital tools in everyday life, but they rarely have access to personal devices or art technology they can explore independently. The Fire HD tablet has given students the chance to practice digital drawing, sketch ideas on the go, and experiment with creative apps in ways that help them grow as young artists and designers.\r\n\r\nWhat students are most excited about, though, is the idea of winning a prize that truly reflects their interests and hard work. When they saw the Mario and Minecraft items, the Pix Brix pixel art kit, the stickers, and the coloring book, there was an immediate buzz in the classroom. These items connect directly to the digital art and game design skills they practice every day. They feel seen and celebrated when the prizes are connected to the art forms they love.\r\n\r\nSome students who are usually quieter or less confident have shown the biggest spark. One student who has struggled with traditional drawing assignments has become incredibly dedicated to her digital artwork, and knowing she could win the tablet has motivated her to push her project further than ever before. Another student who loves pixel art has already asked to create sample pieces with the Pix Brix kit to inspire others. These prizes have created a positive atmosphere of creativity, friendly competition, and pride that carries into daily classwork.\r\n\r\nYour generosity does more than buy materials.
