It has been so exciting to watch more and more books arrive and to see my vision for a rotating classroom bookshelf become a reality.\r\n\r\nIn September, I was able to create our first monthly bookshelf, filled with books that connected directly to what we were learning in social studies. My kindergarten students here in Utah were introduced to Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Hispanic Heritage Month, different families and cultural traditions, along with plenty of fun books celebrating fall.\r\n\r\nNow that October is here, the bookshelf has changed again! This month, my students can explore books about Día de los Muertos, Indigenous Peoples' Day, Halloween, and more seasonal fall topics. The children love looking through the books, and I love that the things we discuss and learn about together are immediately available for them to explore on their own.\r\n\r\nAnd this is only the beginning! I cannot wait to change our bookshelf each month throughout the school year, giving my students opportunities to learn about holidays, traditions, families, cultures, and celebrations that may be familiar to them, as well as many they may have never encountered before.\r\n\r\nThese books are helping me create a classroom where learning about our diverse world is not limited to one lesson or one special day. It is woven into our classroom all year long.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students the opportunity to see just how big, interesting, and beautifully diverse their world is. These small devices have made a big difference during independent work time in our kindergarten classroom. Many young learners are still developing important skills like task initiation, focus, and self-efficacy. For some students—especially those with Autism Spectrum Disorder or students who struggle to believe in their own ability to begin and complete a task—independent work can feel overwhelming. The MP3 players allow students to listen to calming instrumental music while they work, helping them redirect their attention and settle their minds so they can focus on the task in front of them.\r\n\r\nThe results have been incredible. Before introducing the MP3 players, our behavior reports showed over 100 instances of students struggling to initiate or complete independent tasks. Since implementing this support, those behaviors have dropped to zero. Students who previously needed frequent prompting are now able to begin their work more independently and stay engaged longer. The music helps create a predictable routine that signals their brains that it is time to focus and work.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part has been watching students grow in confidence. Some students who used to hesitate or avoid independent work now eagerly put on their headphones and get started right away. What once felt frustrating now feels manageable, and they are beginning to see themselves as capable learners.
