Palacia was fun to read with my book club because it was a mix of so many genres: mystery, supernatural, adventure, and historical fiction. Typially, students at my school enjoy reading fantasy, science fiction, and graphic novels the most, and they don't give other genres much of a look. One of my goals with book club is to expose students to a variety of genres, which they usually end up enjoying. However, this year even my book club readers have struggled getting through other genres. That was not the case with Pony. Students were engaged and invested in the story.\r\n\r\n While reading this book, more students had completed the assigned reading each week, and some even finished the book early. Taylor said, \"The plot was well structured and the characters were mysterious enough to give the story really good twists!\" Sophie said, \"I loved it because you could follow along with the story and solve this mystery type thing.\" McKinley loved that \"it was always keeping you on your toes to see what was going to happen.\"\r\n\r\n Students participated in several fun activites as we progressed through the book like matching pictures to events in the book and putting the events of the story in order. We ended with a Jeopardy trivia game that everyone seemed to enjoy. The students had such positive reactions to the materials, and we have used them well. The most helpful part of the materials received are how versatile and multi-purposeful they are. I have been able to provide more mental health resources to more than 100 students on my caseload thanks to the materials you helped to provide. \r\n\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite stories from using these involves a specific social/emotional game that was provided through your donations. I was working with a student that is very guarded and very shy. I was able to get them to play one of the social/emotional games received through donors choose. As we played the game this student opened up in ways that would have been very difficult to do without it. I now have a strong connection with them and am able to work with them on their mental health in a more productive way. Each time a student is handed one of the Needohs, their eyes light up with excitement, as if they've just discovered a treasure. The simplicity and joy these small gifts bring are truly heartwarming. Some students have even taken it upon themselves to re-gift their Needohs to friends they feel are more in need, showcasing the empathy and kindness that this experience has fostered within them. It's a beautiful chain reaction of giving and receiving that has strengthened the bonds among our students.\r\n\r\nEvery time I pull open the drawer where the Needohs are stored, it's as if I'm unveiling a chest brimming with diamonds. The students' faces are a mixture of awe and disbelief as they gaze at the abundance of these cherished items. It's not just about the physical gifts; it's about the excitement, the shared moments, and the lessons in generosity and empathy that these donations have inspired. This drawer of Needohs has become a symbol of community support, and it continually reminds us all of the kindness that exists in the world. The impact goes beyond the classroom, instilling values that the students carry with them forever.","fullyFundedDate":1728084622054,"projectUrl":"project/calming-the-mind-while-in-school/8637740/","projectTitle":"Calming the Mind While in School","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Alvarez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9651439_orig.jpg?crop=360,360,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723503940245","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9651439"},{"teacherId":3134521,"projectId":8911901,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous contributions! One of the highlights was our hands-on protest activity—students created their own protest signs, drawing inspiration from real revolutionary slogans and ideas. They also curated revolutionary-themed playlists, selecting songs they felt captured the spirit of resistance. To top it off, we enjoyed hot chocolate while discussing the significance of the event and how it shaped early American history.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, they were excited and eager to dive in. Seeing their enthusiasm as they designed signs and debated which modern songs fit the revolutionary era was incredible. Many of them were surprised by how much fun they could have while learning about an 18th-century protest!\r\n\r\nAs for what's next, we're building on this momentum by exploring other key events leading up to the American Revolution. Students will analyze primary sources, participate in debates as Patriots and Loyalists. These items allowed my students to recreate the Boston Tea Party in a memorable and fun way. The hot chocolate, of course, helped them recall the Boston Tea Party. The poster boards, markers, and American flags helped them to create signs. In remembering how the Boston Tea Party was done in protest of British tea taxes, the students were encouraged to make their own protest signs to more fully participate in the tea protest. \r\n\r\nI kept this party a secret, so my students were shocked and thrilled to spend a whole class period drinking hot chocolate to their heart's content and creating an art project. The students who claimed to not be artists were worried about the quality of their posters, but I assured them the whole point was just to be authentic in their protests, and that it was ok if they didn't look like professionals. After all, the Boston Tea Party protesters weren't professionals either! I was happy that so many of them were willing to participate in the art piece of this project. Some students were hilariously disappointed that, unlike at the Boston Tea Party, they were unable to throw the hot chocolate onto the ground. It's to be expected, I am teaching Middle School! \r\n\r\nI am thrilled to have the hot chocolate urns. They are very high quality and I will be able to use them for years to come. Although the other items will need to be replaced annually, the urns make continuing this project for years to come much easier! I have already made continued use of the urns and the remaining packets of hot chocolate by allowing students to bring in their own cups and mugs and have hot chocolate on work days. It is a fun motivator that they look forward to. \r\n\r\nThank you so much again, this was a very fun experience for all of us!","fullyFundedDate":1732558320409,"projectUrl":"project/boston-tea-party-but-make-it-hot-chocol/8808636/","projectTitle":"Boston Tea Party, But Make It Hot Chocolate!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Angelos","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8290513_orig.jpg?crop=1097,1097,x86,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1726856087747","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8290513"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_49171","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1263,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":13,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":85,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 9","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":58.6,"schoolId":49171,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Oquirrh Hills Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Oquirrh Hills Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/utah/jordan-school-district/oquirrh-hills-middle-school/49171"}
