When students first saw the building sets, their reaction was immediate. They wanted to examine the boxes, see how many pieces were involved, figure out what each model represented, and most importantly, know when they could start building.\r\n\r\nStudents are using these materials collaboratively to construct detailed models connected to the historical world we study. The process requires much more than simply putting pieces together. Students have to communicate, divide responsibilities, interpret complex instructions, solve problems, and persist when something does not work the first time. Those moments have given me opportunities to connect history with engineering, architecture, geography, technology, and the ways people throughout history solved problems using the resources and knowledge available to them.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, students will complete additional builds and connect them to the topics we study. The finished models will remain throughout our classroom as permanent visual learning tools that future classes can examine, discuss, and learn from. The size and complexity of the builds created excitement before we even opened the first box. Students began examining the models, asking questions about what they represented, and wanting to know when they would have the opportunity to start building. That curiosity has opened the door to conversations about how engineering, architecture, transportation, and technology have influenced history.\r\n\r\nStudents are working together to construct these models while developing skills that extend well beyond a traditional history assignment. Students will work collaboratively to construct the models, problem-solve when they encounter challenges, and make connections between what they are building and what we are learning in class.\r\n\r\nOne of the things I am most excited about is that the learning will continue even after construction is finished. These builds will become permanent displays and teaching tools in our classroom. As we move through exploration, colonization, revolution, and the development of the United States, students will be able to physically see and reference pieces of the larger world that shaped American history.\r\n\r\nMy goal is for students to do more than read about history or see it on a screen. Many of our students struggle to afford consistent reed replacements, which can directly impact tone quality, response, and overall confidence. With this generous support, we are able to provide reeds to students who otherwise might try to \"make do\" with worn-out equipment, and we are also introducing students to higher-quality reeds as part of our daily warm-ups and section rehearsals. One particularly meaningful moment was hearing students immediately notice the difference in response and sound during long tones—several students smiled, stopped, and said, \"That feels so much easier to play.\"\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the new boxes of reeds, the reaction was a mix of excitement and relief. Some students were genuinely surprised that they could take a reed without worrying about cost, while others were eager to test different strengths and brands for the first time. For many, this was the first opportunity to play on a reed that allowed them to produce a clear, focused tone with less effort. The boost in confidence was immediate, especially for students who had previously felt frustrated or discouraged by equipment limitations.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, these reeds are supporting our current focus on tone development, articulation, and ensemble blend as we prepare repertoire for upcoming performances. Students are learning how to select appropriate reeds, care for them properly, and evaluate how equipment choices affect their sound—skills that will benefit them well beyond this year.
