Most of the students who attend our school are first generation college students. They were chosen to attend our school based on a number of qualities, but the major reason is to give them the opportunity to navigate the rigor of college planning and preparation. One of the major skills necessary for college success is the ability to read and write critically. Unfortunately, many of the students who come to us as freshmen have very poor skills in these areas, and these skills must be explicitly taught.\r\n\r\nBeing able to provide reading material that is both relevant and exciting to read has been a challenge in the past, but with Upfront Magazine I have seen a difference. Many of the lessons available through this magazine allow students to connect with the world as well as engage with their interests.
