Through generous donations, I have compiled a diverse library. The students complete a pacing calendar and read the book over a six week period. All of the reading is done outside of class.\r\n\r\nOn Fridays, students meet with their book club in class to discuss the reading they completed throughout the week. Each week, I give them a different topic to center their discussions around. The topics are exposition, characterization, conflict, symbolism, key quotations, and themes. They have a short preparation assignment to make sure they know what they want to discuss with their group and take notes during their discussions.\r\n\r\nIt has been exciting and rewarding to listen to students take responsibility for their learning and actively discuss the books they chose to read. At the beginning of the year, most of my student have not read an entire book during their high school career. By the time they leave my class, they have read two novels as a class and five more with their book clubs.
