Thanks to your generosity, the experience exceeded any expectations I could have imagined.\r\n\r\nYou may recall that I requested funding to purchase extra copies of books for a reading challenge. Students in grades 3-5 are asked to read at least 20 books from a given list. If they reach this goal, they're invited to a celebration in which we talk about our favorite titles, vote for our favorite book (along with students across the state), and eat some blue ice cream (after all, the list is called the Bluebonnet List). We're nearing the challenge deadline, and I'm beyond pleased to see that more kids have taken an interest in the challenge this year than in previous years. There is no doubt in my mind that having more book copies available increased student interest and made it possible for them to complete the task.\r\n\r\nOne of the titles I've thoroughly enjoyed sharing with classes this past Holocaust Remembrance Week is Stars of the Night: The Courageous Children of the Czech Kindertransport, by Caren Stelson. Teachers have been moved by this book as well, and when our challenge is over, I will pass the extra copies to teachers to include in their classroom libraries for use with future students. (Just this morning during library time, one of the fifth grade teachers said she was planning to purchase the text herself. In addition, we discovered that in the hour before visiting the library with her class, she and her students had been completing a lesson on the Kindertransport operation. What a perfect connection!)\r\n\r\nThe gift of literature is priceless.
