These new books-such as Snapdragon, El Deafo, American Born Chinese, and Speak: The Graphic Novel-have opened up new worlds for my students, making reading both accessible and exciting. Graphic novels are a wonderful way to teach important reading skills like inference, visual literacy, and character analysis. We've been able to dive deep into themes of identity, empathy, and resilience, while also discussing how images and text work together to tell a story.\r\n\r\nReading time in our classroom is now filled with lively discussions and eager page-turning. Students who were previously reluctant readers are now some of our most enthusiastic participants, often finishing a book and immediately asking for another. One student, who had struggled with traditional novels, shared that reading Frizzy helped her see herself in a story for the first time and inspired her to write her own comic. Others have connected with the social-emotional themes in Parachute Kids and When Stars Are Scattered, sparking meaningful conversations about family, friendship, and courage.\r\n\r\nYour donation has not only provided us with engaging books but has also fostered a love of reading and a sense of belonging for every student. Here's a revised version of the \"Describe the Impact\" paragraph tailored for a reading class with the snake enclosure project:\r\n\r\nThanks to your incredible generosity, our classroom now features a safe and engaging home for our class pet snake, which has become an exciting part of our reading and learning environment. When the enclosure first arrived, the students were thrilled and curious, eager to see the new addition and learn how to care for it. This enthusiasm has sparked a wonderful opportunity to integrate the snake into our literacy lessons. For example, students have been reading and researching nonfiction books about snakes and reptiles, then writing their own reports and stories inspired by what they've learned.\r\n\r\nOne memorable moment was when students shared their creative writing pieces during a \"Snake Stories\" reading circle, where they used descriptive language and new vocabulary inspired by their observations and readings. The snake has truly brought our reading lessons to life, making learning more interactive and meaningful.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we plan to continue incorporating the snake into our literacy projects by exploring animal-themed poetry and informational texts, encouraging students to deepen their reading comprehension and writing skills. The Kleenex® Professional Facial Tissues have already made a difference-students feel cared for and comfortable, especially during allergy season, and we're able to keep our learning environment clean and healthy. The excitement was palpable when students first saw the colorful highlighters and page dividers; they immediately began organizing their binders and color-coding their notes for our current research project. One memorable moment was watching a group of students use the new highlighters to collaboratively annotate a reading passage-they were so engaged and proud of their organized work!\r\n\r\nThe VGA cable and acrylic sign holders have also been game-changers. We used the VGA cable to connect our laptop to the projector for a student-led presentation, allowing everyone to share their projects with the class. The sign holders now display student work and daily objectives, making our classroom more interactive and visually engaging.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, these resources will continue to support our ongoing projects, including a collaborative research showcase where students will use the dividers, highlighters, and sign holders to organize and present their findings. Headphones have become an essential tool in creating a focused, engaging, and inclusive environment. By allowing each student to immerse themselves in audio content-whether it's instructional videos, audiobooks, language lessons, or calming music-headphones help block out distractions and foster deeper concentration. This improved focus leads to better information retention and academic performance, especially during independent work and testing situations, where minimizing external noise is crucial. The clarity and quality of sound provided by these headphones also benefit auditory learners, making it easier for them to comprehend lessons and participate actively in class activities.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most about the new headphones is the sense of ownership and independence they gain. Each student can work at their own pace, choosing resources that match their learning style, which is especially empowering for those who thrive on self-directed learning. The headphones also make multimedia lessons and interactive activities more engaging, sparking greater interest and motivation. For group projects, students can collaborate using shared audio resources without disturbing others, which not only enhances teamwork but also makes learning more enjoyable and dynamic. The excitement is palpable when students realize they can explore language apps, listen to stories, or participate in virtual lessons with crisp, clear audio that brings the content to life.\r\n\r\nCertain students have especially benefited from this technology. For example, students with sensory sensitivities or learning differences have found comfort and focus using headphones, as the devices help manage sensory overload and create a personal \"sound sanctuary\" in a busy classroom. One student with autism, who previously struggled with noise and distractions, now feels more at ease and participates more confidently in lessons. Others who were easily distracted or anxious during independent work have shown increased engagement and productivity, taking pride in using and caring for their own set of headphones. Overall, the headphones have not only supported academic growth but have also fostered a sense of responsibility, independence, and inclusion among all students.","fullyFundedDate":1723082959613,"projectUrl":"project/hear-the-story-tell-the-story/8323555/","projectTitle":"Hear the Story, Tell the Story","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Garcia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8708762_orig.jpg?crop=956,956,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1699816889137","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8708762"},{"teacherId":8708762,"projectId":8816976,"letterContent":"The generous donation that provided our classroom with a full set of Uglies has had a profound and lasting impact on our 7th and 8th grade students. This book not only captivated their imaginations with its fast-paced plot and compelling characters, but it also sparked meaningful discussions about identity, conformity, and the pressures of modern society. Many students found themselves deeply engaged by the story of Tally and her friends, who live in a future where everyone is expected to undergo surgery at sixteen to become \"Pretty.\" The parallels between the world of Uglies and our own society's preoccupation with appearance and fitting in were not lost on our students; they eagerly compared and contrasted their own experiences with those of the characters, reflecting on the ways in which societal expectations shape their lives.\r\n\r\nThrough our class discussions and projects, students learned to value different perspectives and to question the status quo, just as Tally begins to do in the novel. The book provided a safe space for students to explore complex themes such as personal identity, peer pressure, and the consequences of striving for perfection. Activities like creating their own ideal societies and debating the pros and cons of Tally's world versus our own encouraged critical thinking and fostered respect for diverse opinions. Many students expressed that reading Uglies helped them better understand the importance of being true to themselves, even when it means standing out or challenging popular norms. The book's dystopian setting, while fantastical, became a powerful lens through which students could examine real-world issues, making literature feel both relevant and transformative in their lives.\r\n\r\nNone of this would have been possible without the support of our donors. Your generosity gave every student access to their own copy of the book, ensuring that no one was left out of these important conversations. The excitement and engagement in our classroom were palpable, and the lessons learned from Uglies will stay with our students long after the last page was turned. Thank you for believing in the power of reading to inspire, challenge, and unite young minds. Your gift has truly made a difference in our classroom community and in the lives of each student who participated in this memorable literary journey.","fullyFundedDate":1733255611454,"projectUrl":"project/an-ugly-dystopian-experience/8816976/","projectTitle":"An Ugly Dystopian Experience","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Garcia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8708762_orig.jpg?crop=956,956,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1699816889137","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8708762"},{"teacherId":9870924,"projectId":9000784,"letterContent":"Hello Amazing Person, \r\n\r\nI just wanted to start off by saying that you really are amazing and your kindness will continue to make a difference in this world. I wish I knew why you chose ours but I would like to think you remember what it's like being in the classroom and that you wanted to bring smiles to kids faces. Smiles would be an understatement for these kids too because they were beyond excited when they heard someone actually got us the habitat so quickly after I told them I posted it. The first day they showed up and I had it set up they were screaming!\r\n\r\nThe kids are so excited to walk into class every single morning to see what Charizard (our bearded dragon) is doing or how his skin has changed from the previous day. They love feeding him every day and changing his water. I also use him as an incentive. For example if they finish work early or are just making good choices in general I will let them hold him or put him on their desk for a little while. I tried to teach them what an anonymous donor is and most of them understood. They all want to know who you are to thank you!\r\n\r\nI as a teacher enjoy coming to work everyday knowing that I always have my friend Charziard with me.
