Your generous gift has made that possible for us! Today and for the remainder of this week we'll be using microscopes and microslide viewers to study a variety of cell types and viruses. While we've discussed and drawn models of cells and viruses in class, we so far hadn't had a chance to dig into what it all looks like in real life. The microslide sets we've been given show a variety of cell types at different magnifications, allowing for easier examination of cells we normally can't see with our classroom microscopes. I've also prepared a variety of slides and items so students can see real life instances of the examples we're observing (for example, students are examining moldy bread with a dissecting microscope, and examining fungus images up close with the microslide viewer). \r\n\r\nSince our state test just finished last week, students weren't really sure what to expect. As they walked into our classroom and saw they were going to have the chance to explore the excitement palpably built (no easy feat considering these are high schoolers). Besides for the slides and microslides I had ready to go, students were ecstatic to put other items under examination. I saw pencils, hair, hands, and more being examined by students with our new microslides and microscopes. \r\n\r\nWhile this has been an exciting project so far, we'll continue to use these resources over the next weeks as students begin research projects. They'll be connecting cell biology to topics of their choosing, to explore how the smallest living things help shape us and our world. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your gift and for making these projects possible. I'm so excited for my current and future students to get to explore and learn more about their world.","fullyFundedDate":1735345931818,"projectUrl":"project/zooming-into-the-world-of-cells-micros/8947477/","projectTitle":"\"Zooming Into the World of Cells: Microslides for Young Scientists\"","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Shimko","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1801771_orig.jpg?crop=720,720,x0,y192&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1731700119362","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1801771"},{"teacherId":9807517,"projectId":8887776,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your donation to our Science Explorers here at Lake Highlands! You have no idea of the impact you have on these students. Many of our participants are learning things they have never heard of. We have students making a fully functioning hydroponics system while learning how this is beneficial in bigger cities. We have another student who is building a hydroelectric generator using some of the material purchased. We even have one who was inspired to explore quantum mechanics!\r\n\r\nOur students are really enjoying STEM while being able to focus on things that interest them outside of the curriculum they are exposed to each day. Not only will it enhance the beautification of the school, it will make a major impact with all kinds of animals, and students learning about different plants insects, and more.\r\nWe will have a garden where students, who do not have space at their home to grow vegetables, now will be able to. Students will learn about the anatomy of plants, reproductive cycle of plants, why certain soil is important for plants, and more. My students are really excited about growing their own food that they can take home and make a dish from it and also share new knowledge gained from the garden with their family members. Yesterday, in our meeting ,we have started seedlings like tomatoes, beans, and peppers. We are excited for them to grow and transplant them to the garden. \r\n\r\nWe are so appreciative of all of the tools and materials that were donated to help make this project a success. Our next step is to have a volunteer garden landscaper, who is also a master gardener, to help give advice on different things about the garden.
