Some students are drawn to stories that remind them of their own, to voices that, in some way, represent their own backgrounds. Others, though, are drawn to stories that open new worlds for them, that help them learn about lives unlike their own. I had feelings of relief that I wouldn't have to run around asking other teachers for extra supplies or having to purchase them myself.\r\n\r\nStudents were worried that they could not afford to purchase a poster and I was happy to be able to tell them that all of their supplies were ready to be used and that they didn't have to purchase the supplies themselves! As students were working on their projects they made remarks such as \"Dang, Miss we have the expensive markers now!\" and \"Wow, Miss these markers are better than the cheap, broken ones you had.\" I wasn't offended in the slightest! I was happy that they got to use good, quality markers to express their thoughts visually.\r\n\r\nLiterature is incredibly important to our world today and I find that students just want to be able to express themselves and adding a creative component to a difficult subject like English allows them to do just that.
