What started as a small reading library has blossomed into something that I never dreamed could happen! Imagine my surprise when the kids were as excited as me!!!\r\nMany of my kids live in households where reading is not commonplace---or even a priority. Many of our kids are unable to read grade level books---and need some skills and encouragement to help them learn. I tutor some kids at lunch in the basics but they really need to practice reading books that appeal to them and fit their reading levels.\r\nI began a Book Buddies program to pair exceptional readers with students who struggle. These kids have helped me scan and organize the books we received. You should have heard the squeals and excitement that ensued as we opened the boxes. As a teacher, nothing is more exciting than finding students who know what pleasure and joy reading can bring! I have paired the books that you donated with some higher level readers. So, we now have reading materials for all of my students. Please look at the pictures!\r\nIn the next week or two, we will open our \"library\" for kids. I don't know if the readers, the Book Buddies, or I am more excited. The moment they saw the new materials, their faces lit up—several students immediately started imagining experiments we could try, and one even said, \"We look like real scientists now!\" We've already used the resources to complete our cell model project, where students built detailed, to-scale representations of plant and animal cells and then presented them to the class with incredible pride.\r\n\r\nThese tools have transformed our daily lessons; instead of just reading about biology, students are actively exploring it. As we move into our next unit on genetics, the resources from this project will help students participate in interactive labs that would not have been possible before.
