By having a hygiene drawer that my students can comfortably access, they are able to enjoy a lighter school day with fewer worries and distractions. My students have genuinely used and appreciated all of the donations, from the hair ties and combs to every other item included in the drawer.\r\n\r\nMany of my students have mornings where they may forget to complete simple personal hygiene tasks before arriving at school, and the hygiene drawer helps to ease their day and boost their confidence. Rather than feeling self conscious or distracted by these oversights, students can quickly address their needs and focus on learning. Our students were so excited to learn about pellets and were really surprised that we could figure out so much about an owl's ecosystem based on what was in the pellet. Student responses were consistently shifting from hesitant to excited. When time was up for the actual dissection, several students put their pellet materials in a plastic bag so they could come back and examine it further during study hall (reboot time). Historically, we teach energy transfer in ecosystems through images and diagrams, but having a hands-on experience for the students helped their understanding grow in ways we had not experienced in previous years. Thank you for helping us make this unit engaging for our students!\r\n\r\nWe had not intended to, but we also decided to use this experience to connect to students' understanding of biomagnification. As top predators in their ecosystem, owls provide an engaging way for students to learn more about how contaminants can affect food webs/chains and energy pyramids. This was a topic in our curriculum that needed additional support and the owl pellets were a perfect hands-on application opportunity. \r\n\r\nThank you so very much for this learning opportunity. We plan to relive this experience next year with students and fine-tune it based on our experiences this year. We appreciate you so much for your generosity!","fullyFundedDate":1767710660832,"projectUrl":"project/whooooo-is-from-where/9690346/","projectTitle":"Whooooo is from where?","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Frazier","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7277257"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_106511","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":500,"numTeachers":1,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":88,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"500.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":69.4,"schoolId":106511,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dr. Kirk Lewis Career & Technical High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Dr. Kirk Lewis Career & Technical High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/pasadena-independent-school-district/career-technical-high-school/106511"}
