Through these texts, students are learning to analyze tone, purpose, and rhetorical strategies in real-world writing. We're discussing how writers build credibility, engage their audience, and structure arguments that feel both personal and persuasive. Reading in my classroom is active and discussion-based. Students annotate with purpose and often write in response to what they've read. The goal isn't just to understand the text—it's to talk back to it, question it, and learn from it.\r\nSeveral students who were previously disengaged or hesitant readers have connected with these texts in ways I hadn't seen all year. One student in particular, who usually prefers to stay quiet in discussions, chose an essay about language and identity that reminded him of his family's experiences. These books gave students permission to explore nonfiction writing that feels real, modern, and reflective of their world—and it's made a visible difference.","fullyFundedDate":1744243977367,"projectUrl":"project/meet-them-where-they-are-hooking-them-o/9155976/","projectTitle":"Meet Them Where They Are: Hooking Them On The Essay","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Paiz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9003866_orig.jpg?crop=1919,1919,x0,y319&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1685644240103","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9003866"},{"teacherId":9003866,"projectId":9272975,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support in bringing engaging books of essays into my AP Language and Dual Credit classroom! Your donation gave my students something they didn't know they were missing—a reason to read for curiosity, voice, and connection, not just for analysis or test prep.\r\n\r\nWhen the books first arrived, my students' reactions were a mix of surprise and genuine interest. They arrived towards the end of the year and were excited to see th titles such as Anthropocene Reviewed, Talking Back, The Light Eaters, and many more. Many of them flipped through the pages and said things like, \"Wait—this actually looks good,\" or \"This reminds me of something I've thought about.\" That spark—that moment where a student sees themselves or their questions reflected in a piece of writing—is exactly what I hoped for. For students who are often overwhelmed by academic texts, having access to modern, diverse voices writing about real-world issues has helped humanize nonfiction and make it feel more relevant and personal.\r\nusing some of the essays from the books right away as we prepped for the nonfiction passages on our AP exam. I was able to cull and create some great starting points for lessons to use with them and the upcoming class. I used a few as mentor texts to help them see how good writers write skillfully about what they know and develop their voice through that. One that was a major hit was Anthropocene Reviewed. I had my students make their own list of things they would write about and had them review something that has impacted them personally and humankind. \r\n\r\nThanks to your support, I am now working hard to read these essays and cull some to use for this upcoming school year. Your contribution gave us the models we needed to launch that work with intention and authenticity.\r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of my heart—thank you. After a rigorous year filled with close reading, deep analysis, timed essays, and constant academic pressure, your contribution provided something incredibly special—joy, curiosity, and connection!\r\nWhen AP testing ended, my students were mentally exhausted but still eager and curious to learn in new ways. Thanks to your support, I was able to create a relaxed and engaging environment the last few days after testing where they could continue to sharpen their thinking and problem-solving skills without the stress of grades or exams. These games offered the perfect balance of fun and intellectual stimulation. I watched students who are often hesitant during academic tasks take the lead during strategy games, collaborate during brain teasers, and cheer each other on with genuine enthusiasm!\r\nFor many of my juniors—who come from economically disadvantaged homes—opportunities like these are rare. Some of my students don't always have access to books, quiet time, or enrichment activities outside of school. Your donation gave them access to high-quality, thoughtful games that challenged their minds while building classroom community and confidence. It was powerful to see them laughing together over wordplay and riddles, competing in teams, and using their analytical skills in new and creative ways. In a lot of ways, it helped us bond even more as we celebrated a long, tough year together!\r\nThese moments of joy and connection reminded my students (and me) that learning doesn't have to stop when the test ends. You helped me show them that intelligence takes many forms and that even play can hold value and purpose.\r\nFrom the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in public education, for valuing students in Title I schools, and for bringing some light and laughter to the end of our academic year.
