The Texas Library Association leads The Texas Bluebonnet Award. \"It is one of the most prestigious children's choice literary awards in the United States. Each year, 20 books are chosen for the Texas Bluebonnet Award List. Schools and libraries around the state participate in the program, encouraging students to read a minimum of five books from the list. In January, students vote for their favorite title.\" -txla.org. \r\n\r\nMy students were so excited to have the books for our classroom so we could read at least 5 from the list to meet our reading goal. Reading in our classroom looks like each student getting to chose a book and find a spot in the class to really just read for 20 minutes a day (during this time there is no electronic technology, no worksheets, it's just books). This can be anything from a joke book they are reading with a friend, a graphic-novel, or a chapter book. We practice reading silently and out loud to partner. We have several different reading levels in the classroom. Having been gifted these books allows for so much more voice and choice in my students reading selections. The large black drawers were originally used for items such as folders, glue sticks, and computer mice, but students later suggested that the drawers could be used as an organized space to turn in their work—and it has worked wonderfully!\r\n\r\nAllowing students to have a voice in how we use our classroom materials has given them a strong sense of ownership and pride in keeping our space organized. It's been great watching them practice their book knowledge by holding the book correctly and modeling of reading. They use the books to name labels in the pictures, or if they don't know the word in English, they will point it out to me and I will tell them the word. We practice it and it's helped so much with communicating!
