Your donations—a new bookshelf, bean bag chairs, and a collection of manga—have completely transformed our classroom's approach to literacy and relaxation. While many of you share a passion for reading, you may not realize the specific skills these new texts introduce. The manga collection has been instrumental in teaching students how to analyze flashbacks and their utilization in developing complex narratives and inferring tone and emotion from expressive illustrations. These are critical skills for reading in the 21st century! For instance, following the intricate and often emotional flashback sequences in series like One Piece has helped students understand how an author uses non-linear structure to deepen a character's motivation and the overall plot. This project has shown our students that reading comes in many powerful and engaging forms that require sophisticated analytical thinking.\r\n\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is now a much more dynamic and highly anticipated experience. Thanks to the bean bag chairs and the dedicated bookshelf, we've created a comfortable Reading Corner, a space that signals relaxation and reward. Reading now looks like students eagerly rushing to choose a quiet spot in the bean bags after completing their work, diving into a volume of manga instead of reaching for a device. This dedicated, cozy space promotes reading as a choice, not just an assignment. Furthermore, our Friday tradition of manga read-alouds has been a huge success. The combination of your donations has fostered a sense of communal enjoyment, with the whole class listening intently and visually following along, which encourages even our most reluctant readers to participate in the shared story.\r\n\r\nPerhaps the most rewarding impact has been the way this project has elevated the status of reading for all students. The high-interest manga has served as a critical entry point for students who previously saw reading as a chore. I can think of one student, who rarely finished assigned readings, but now uses their completed work time consistently to sit in the new bean bag chairs, completely engrossed in the latest manga volume. This student is now enthusiastically discussing story arcs with peers—something that never happened before. The chairs and the books together communicate a powerful message: reading is valued, comfortable, and deeply rewarding. Thank you for helping us create a literacy environment where every student, regardless of their background, feels excited to pick up a book and relax into a great story.","fullyFundedDate":1753977082171,"projectUrl":"project/help-us-go-plus-ultra-build-our-manga/9514047/","projectTitle":"Help Us Go Plus Ultra — Build Our Manga Library!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Wulff","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10099769_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y504&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753829129941","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10099769"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_14457","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":809,"numTeachers":74,"percentFrplEligible":85,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":13,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":70,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"10.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":65.0,"schoolId":14457,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Krueger Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Krueger Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/north-east-independent-school-district/krueger-middle-school/14457"}
