Learning to care for our pet has given students a sense of responsibility and something they can take pride in. They love checking on the pet, helping with its care, and making sure it has everything it needs.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, the pet has become something they look forward to each day. It has created opportunities for students to slow down, be gentle, work together, and practice being responsible. I have seen students who may struggle with staying engaged become excited when it is their turn to help care for the pet.\r\n\r\nThe experience has also created natural opportunities to teach students about routines, responsibility, observation, and caring for another living thing. More importantly, it has brought a lot of laughter, excitement, and positive energy into the resource room. At the beginning, some students were ready to put their books away as soon as possible. Now, I hear, \"Can I read one more page?\" or \"Do we have to put our books away?\" That change has been amazing to watch.\r\n\r\nFree Read Friday has become one of their favorite times of the week. Students get excited about choosing a book, finding a comfortable spot, and getting lost in their own story. They love being able to choose what they want to read, and I have seen students become more confident about talking about their books and sharing what they are reading with others.\r\n\r\nWhat I love most is that reading has started to feel less like something they *have* to do and more like something they *want* to do. Students are recommending books to each other, looking forward to continuing stories, and getting excited when they find a book they really enjoy. Even students who once struggled to stay interested in a book are now asking when they can have more reading time.\r\n\r\nSeeing them not want to put their books away is something I never thought I would complain about—but it is a problem I am happy to have! Free Read Friday and our daily opportunities to read have helped create a classroom where books are something to look forward to. Reading games have played a huge part in that change. Instead of seeing reading practice as another assignment, students now see it as something they can enjoy and be successful at.\r\n\r\nI have used games to practice skills such as vocabulary, context clues, comprehension, main idea, author's purpose, and making inferences. The games give students an opportunity to practice these skills over and over without the repetition feeling boring. I love seeing students get excited when they recognize an answer, beat their previous score, or help a teammate figure something out.\r\n\r\nThe games have also helped build confidence. Some students who are hesitant to answer during a traditional reading lesson are much more willing to participate when we are playing a game. They are learning to take chances with their answers, explain their thinking, and learn from mistakes without feeling embarrassed. The room feels more relaxed, and there is often a lot more laughter and conversation during reading practice.\r\n\r\nI am continuing to look for new reading games and activities so I can keep things fresh and give students a variety of ways to practice the skills they need. My goal is for students to leave the resource room not only stronger in reading, but also feeling like reading is something they can actually enjoy. They look forward to their turn and are excited when I bring them out for a whole-group lesson. It has been really rewarding to see that change in their attitude and engagement.\r\n\r\nI have found that incorporating games into our intervention time has made a big difference. The games give students a chance to practice skills without feeling like they are just doing more work. They enjoy working together, challenging themselves, and celebrating when they get an answer right. Sometimes they are so focused on having fun that they do not even realize how much learning is happening.\r\n\r\nThe games have also helped make the resource room feel like a positive and welcoming place. Students are more willing to participate, take risks, and keep trying when they know learning can be enjoyable. I am continuing to look for and purchase more fun and engaging items so that I can build a good rotation of activities and keep students excited about coming to intervention.\r\n\r\nI truly appreciate all that you do to support the resource room and help me create an environment where my students feel successful, comfortable, and excited to learn. We won an attendance reward as students are not going home sick or becoming sick. An added bonus is that kids love to get to keep the classroom clean. Thus, they are learning responsibility in the classroom. They love it when it time to clean. Each student has their own area to clean in the classroom. The only rule is that they are not able to spray the lysol.
