The end of the year went by fast. Your patience is appreciated. Students who attend my program have gotten into some trouble and they are on my campus for a consequence. However, our goal is to continue their learning as well as give them tools to help them become more successful in the future.\r\n\r\nThe supplies you provided helped us continue to practice Cornell note taking. Students were able to organize their thoughts and facts so it was easy to recall important information. Our creative products pictures and small models were enhanced by being able to add color and detail with colored pencils and markers. Some students used extra time in class to write poems, songs, and letters to friends and family. A few independently chose to write their own exit letters. They expressed which teachers and activities they felt helped them grow as a person. Before we had them, I had only an unknown book and missing pieces that the teacher before left behind, this was a difficult task for me because I didn't know the book or have the training with it. Now, with these materials the person who makes them has given me links to videos on how to set it up and how to work with the kids. I am not the only one who loves this small group change. They are engaged and loving the new group activities! The light boards are set up with sand and pictures for them to create images by example as well as make their own. The students also had the chance to use the light boards with the geometric shapes to make tangram designs. The geometric shapes came with example pages that I posted for them to explore. Next week I will be putting the letters and their name cards for them to make/build their names. My students ate exploring the materials right now but soon I will have them using it with a purpose. The letters will be used to make their names or vocabulary words that go with our unit. The numbers will be used with a few different math games. This is beneficial for those who are significantly below grade level. The sense of privacy allows the student I'm working with to take chances and try harder. Students maintain their focus while we work together. This has been a small change but it gives a GREAT impact.\r\n\r\nCalm and focused students. We were without proper space to store our mats, blocks and blankets. All of this would almost take us out our balanced peaceful state.\r\n\r\nNow, we have one organized way to take everything out and return our little supplies. Everyone has a mat and two blocks and just enough bolsters for the ones that need it.\r\n\r\nWhat's the impact? As we began the school year, one returning student excitedly shared his martial arts practice. He mentioned that he \"breathes like we breathe during sun salutations.\" WOW!\r\n\r\nYour contributions are allowing me to introduce students to tools to empower them to manage their emotions and take some control of their lives. This all leads to their untold success. I work in education with the hope to make a positive impact on young people.
