Your generosity has already made a wonderful difference in our music room. During the first few weeks of school, every one of these grade levels has had the opportunity to use the new drums, and they have fit seamlessly into our music lessons. \r\n\r\nFor our Pre-K and Kindergarten students, these drums were their very first instruments introduced in the music room! It was so exciting to watch their faces light up when they saw that they each had a drum to play. We began learning about the steady beat by having students play an 8-count pattern together. They were thrilled to discover that they could make music themselves, and it was a wonderful first experience with keeping a steady beat and following directions in a music classroom.\r\n\r\nOur 1st grade students have been using the drums to review the important concept of what has a steady beat and what does not. One of my favorite moments was when they accompanied their classmates during a poem performance of *\"Windshield Wipers.\"* While their classmates performed the poem, the drummers kept a steady beat, listening carefully and working together to support the performance. It was a wonderful example of how an instrument can become part of a larger classroom experience rather than simply being something students play on their own.\r\n\r\nOur 2nd grade students have been building their percussion skills by learning how to properly hold and use mallets. They have also been practicing an important musical skill: playing when it is their turn and not simply playing whenever they want! The drums have given each student the opportunity to practice responding to musical cues, listening for key words, and controlling when they play. They are learning that being a good musician involves just as much listening and self-control as it does making sound.\r\n\r\nWe are just getting started! As the year continues, students will build on these beginning skills and move toward playing more complex rhythms, responding to musical patterns, accompanying songs and stories, and eventually creating and performing their own rhythmic ideas. I am excited to see how the students' confidence, musical independence, and ability to work together grow as they continue using the drums.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving our students the opportunity to make our music lessons more active, engaging, and accessible. They love drawing pictures, practicing shapes and letters, and working together.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was watching students collaborate on a large drawing together. They shared colors, talked about their ideas, and encouraged one another while creating.
