What might seem like simple tools to others—therapy putty, sensory stones, chair bands, and visual supports—felt special and meaningful to them. Several students smiled, some asked, \"Is this for us?\" and others began exploring the items with curiosity and excitement. For many of my students, who have experienced instability or limited access to resources, having something that belonged to their classroom created a sense of pride and ownership right away.\r\n\r\nWe now use these tools daily as part of our classroom routine. The visual countdown timer and First-Then schedule have made transitions smoother and reduced anxiety because students know what to expect. Sensory tools like putty, stones, and chair bands are used during instruction to help students stay regulated and focused rather than becoming overwhelmed. Bob Books have become a favorite during small group and independent reading time—students who once avoided reading are now willing to try, celebrate small wins, and even ask to read more.\r\n\r\nOne moment that stood out was during a writing activity when a student who typically becomes frustrated and shuts down began to show signs of escalation. Instead of leaving their seat or refusing to work, they quietly picked up their therapy putty and started using it while I continued the lesson. Within minutes, they were calm enough to re-engage and complete their assignment. Moments like this are powerful—because they show growth, independence, and the ability to self-regulate. These tools are not just supplies; they are helping my students regulate, read, and truly rise.","fullyFundedDate":1766501164721,"projectUrl":"project/regulate-read-and-rise-a-classroom-bu/9873278/","projectTitle":"Regulate, Read, and Rise: A Classroom Built for Success","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Parris","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9813204_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1759948811698","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9813204"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_9136","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":72,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":92,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":29,"percentWhite":19,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":43,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"4 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"2.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":76.0,"schoolId":9136,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Opportunity Awareness Center on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Opportunity Awareness Center","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/katy-independent-school-district/opportunity-awareness-center/9136"}
