Having access to works like Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng has allowed students to engage deeply with themes that resonate with their own experiences and the complexities of the modern world. These texts have prompted sophisticated discussions about race, identity, belonging, and family expectations—topics that students approach with both empathy and insight. Because each student has their own copy, they are able to annotate, cite evidence, and bring textual analysis into class conversations and essays with confidence.\r\n\r\nThe availability of these books has also shifted how students feel about reading in an academic context. Several have shared that, although the reading is technically schoolwork, it feels like a welcome break from the stresses of their other courses because they feel genuinely connected to the characters and stories. This personal investment has strengthened both their analytical skills and their appreciation for literature as a mirror of human experience.\r\n\r\nWe have not yet read all of the donated books, but we plan to before the end of the year. Having just completed Everything I Never Told You, students are already expressing excitement and curiosity about our next novel, Exit West by Mohsin Hamid. The anticipation and engagement these donations have generated demonstrate how access to diverse, relevant literature can create not only stronger readers and writers, but also more thoughtful, empathetic young adults.","fullyFundedDate":1746486159234,"projectUrl":"project/the-new-classics-fresh-stories-for-toda/9263825/","projectTitle":"The New Classics: Fresh Stories for Today's Students","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Smith","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5919917_orig.jpg?crop=466,466,x13,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1745257975363","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5919917"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_11820","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":922,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":81,"percentAsian":31,"percentBlack":15,"percentWhite":13,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":34,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":73.2,"schoolId":11820,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Michael E Debakey High School for Health Professions on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Michael E Debakey High School for Health Professions","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/houston-independent-school-district/debakey-high-school/11820"}
