Many of my students enter the classroom believing that reading is something they have to do rather than something they can genuinely enjoy. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief changed that.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, this was the first novel they eagerly picked up without being asked. They connected with Percy because he struggles with feeling different, faces challenges that seem overwhelming, and learns that his unique qualities are actually strengths. My students saw pieces of themselves in his journey. They cheered for his successes, worried during his obstacles, and celebrated his growth.\r\n\r\nThe novel sparked meaningful conversations about courage, friendship, loyalty, and perseverance. Students who were often reluctant to participate began raising their hands to share predictions, discuss character motivations, and connect events in the story to their own lives. The classroom transformed from a place where reading was an assignment into a community of readers excited to talk about books.\r\n\r\nPerhaps the most rewarding moment was hearing students ask, \"Can we read the next book?\" Those words may seem simple, but for many of my students, they represented a newfound love of reading. The excitement generated by Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief extended beyond our classroom walls as students shared the story with friends and family and sought out additional books on their own.\r\n\r\nBecause of the generosity of donors, my students were able to experience the joy of owning and reading a high-interest novel together. The impact reached far beyond reading skills, it built confidence, encouraged empathy, fostered a sense of belonging, and helped students discover that they are capable readers. For that, I am incredibly grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1773450271719,"projectUrl":"project/turning-readers-into-heroes-with-percy-j/10147021/","projectTitle":"Turning Readers into Heroes with Percy Jackson!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Langston","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9862276_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1734796554720","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9862276"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_16866","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":696,"numTeachers":52,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":95,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":62.5,"schoolId":16866,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Vernon Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Vernon Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/harlingen-consolidated-independent-school-district/vernon-middle-school/16866"}
