We received magnetic bookshelves, copy paper to print their responses to the plot, an electric pencil sharpener for their colored pencils, and museum putty to display their creativity. These resources helped us build a more organized and student-centered classroom.\r\n\r\nThanks to the copy paper, students were able to type and print their plot responses to The Outsiders. E. Hinton, and it made a real impact in our classroom.\r\n\r\nWhile reading the book, we focused on skills like analyzing character motivation, understanding point of view, and identifying how conflict drives the plot. We also explored deeper themes such as identity, belonging, and social class, which led to some meaningful conversations and personal reflections.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading was active and engaging. Students annotated, asked questions, and participated in group discussions where they shared insights and challenged each other's thinking. Reading in our classroom often starts with a \"book talk,\" where students share what they're reading with a partner or group and why they enjoy it. After reading their books, students write summaries and reflect on their experiences with the story, sharing their thoughts with classmates during group discussions. This not only helps improve their comprehension and writing skills but also builds a collaborative learning environment where students recommend books to each other.\r\n\r\nOne particular student who stands out is a reluctant reader who picked up The Last Kids on Earth because of its humor and illustrations. They've since finished it and are excited to explore the rest of the series! Another student, who is a reluctant reader, connected deeply with Free Lunch and shared how it resonated with their experiences.\r\n\r\nThanks to the generosity of our donors, these books have brought excitement and depth to our reading time, sparking meaningful discussions, encouraging thoughtful reflections, and fostering a genuine love for literature among my students.","fullyFundedDate":1727966883236,"projectUrl":"project/building-a-bridge-to-literacy/8813099/","projectTitle":"Building a Bridge to Literacy","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Serna","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4404814_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1568940186868","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/sernasuccess"},{"teacherId":4404814,"projectId":8636446,"letterContent":"The new resources have been a fantastic addition to our classroom! The books were a hit—students were thrilled to see titles that matched their interests and reading levels. Even my struggling readers eagerly picked up books because they were just right for their Lexile levels. The new bookshelves also made a big difference. Having the books displayed so beautifully allowed students to browse easily and choose what appealed to them without hesitation.\r\n\r\nOne memorable moment was when a student, who usually avoids reading, excitedly picked up a book from the new shelf and shared how much they loved the cover. They even asked if we could set aside more time to read!\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, students will use these books to complete book reviews and share recommendations with their classmates.
