After a lot of learning how to draw, the kids were ready & excited to start our first project of the year...wire sculptures!\r\nFirst year students had to make a hand, realistic or monster like & pose their fingers. Repeat students were allowed to choose something else to make using wire for the structure, covered it with foil to 'beef' it up, masking tape to cover the foil, and plaster strips to harden their sculpture to paint.\r\nThey learned about proportions and when I yanked a wire down to demonstrate their thumbs don't start at the same spot as the rest of their fingers, you would've thought I yanked it off!\r\nThank you for supporting our class. These tools have provided our students with valuable opportunities to learn by doing and have helped bring math, measurement, problem-solving, and construction skills to life.\r\n\r\nOur students have been putting these tools to work in several hands-on projects. They have been creating geoboards, using both the miter box saws and electric hand drills to build their projects. While making their geoboards, students are also putting their math skills into practice as they carefully measure and create a precise 1\" × 1\" grid across their boards.\r\n\r\nStudents have also used the miter box saws to create a \"Big Inch\" project. In this activity, students magnified all of the markings between 0 and 1 inch onto a piece of wood. This project gives students a hands-on way to better understand fractions, measurement, and the importance of precision.\r\n\r\nThe miter box saws have also been an important part of our students' work as they learn to use a speed square to measure and cut the components of a common rafter. Students are learning that accurate measurements and careful cuts are essential skills in the construction industry.\r\n\r\nAnd we are not finished yet! Our next project will be creating 8\" × 10\" picture frames, giving students another opportunity to use both the miter box saws and electric hand drills while developing their measuring, cutting, drilling, assembly, and finishing skills.\r\n\r\nYour donation is doing more than providing tools—it is giving students the opportunity to build confidence, develop practical skills, apply mathematics, practice safe tool use, and experience the satisfaction of creating something with their own hands.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our students and helping us provide meaningful, hands-on learning experiences!","fullyFundedDate":1787176396945,"projectUrl":"project/woodworking-basics/10238668/","projectTitle":"Woodworking Basics","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Jett-Janacek","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10484545_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y386&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1776957717404","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10484545"},{"teacherId":10484545,"projectId":10214505,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous donation of Swanson speed squares, tape measures, and combination squares to our classroom! These measuring tools have become an essential part of our students' learning and have been used throughout every project we have completed so far.\r\n\r\nYour donation has allowed students to move beyond learning measurement skills from a textbook and experience how these tools are actually used in the skilled trades. Students have practiced measuring, marking, checking accuracy, and applying math concepts while working on hands-on construction projects.\r\n\r\nOne of our first activities was a Speed Square Skills Challenge. Students worked in groups, with each group learning one of 12 different ways to use a speed square. They created demonstrations and hands-on activities and then became the teachers by leading their classmates through their assigned skill. This activity strengthened both their construction knowledge and their communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.\r\n\r\nStudents also created \"The Big Inch,\" using tape measures and speed squares to magnify all of the markings between 0 and 1 inch onto a piece of wood. This project gave students a concrete way to explore fractions, precision, and measurement while learning how important accuracy is in construction.\r\n\r\nOur students have also used these measuring tools while building geoboards. They worked with grid paper to create templates and then transferred those measurements to their wood pieces before using the chomp saw to create their projects. Students were able to see firsthand how careful planning, accurate measurement, and proper tool use work together to produce a successful project.\r\n\r\nImpact on Student Learning\r\n\r\nThese materials have made a significant impact by giving students authentic, hands-on exposure to the skilled trades. Students are learning that construction is not simply about using tools—it requires math, precision, communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and attention to detail.\r\n\r\nThe donated measuring tools have helped me create learning experiences where students can measure it, mark it, build it, and see the results of their work. They are developing practical skills and confidence while making connections between what they learn in the classroom and how those skills are used in real-world construction careers.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our students and helping us give them the opportunity to learn through hands-on experiences!","fullyFundedDate":1777464074990,"projectUrl":"project/precision-measuring-design/10214505/","projectTitle":"Precision Measuring & Design","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Jett-Janacek","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10484545_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y386&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1776957717404","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10484545"},{"teacherId":6349902,"projectId":10275023,"letterContent":"I am so grateful for the support that made this project possible and for the impact these resources are already having on my students. During my Meet the Counselor lessons, students were able to explore the counseling classroom and experience the different tools and activities firsthand. They loved coloring, trying the diamond art, and using the NeeDoh stress toys and other sensory tools. These activities gave them an engaging way to practice mindfulness, refocus, and learn that they have tools available to help manage big emotions.\r\n\r\nThe resources have made an especially meaningful difference for students who experience anxiety or feel overwhelmed. During the first week of school, I had several very anxious students, and the weighted animals and cozy rug area made a noticeable impact in helping them feel calm and safe. Students were so excited to see the new items and immediately gravitated toward the calming space.\r\n\r\nThese materials are helping me create the welcoming counseling environment I envisioned, where students can practice self regulation, explore healthy coping strategies, and feel comfortable opening up. Most importantly, I want students to leave my room knowing that their emotions do not have to control them and that they are capable of finding calm and managing difficult moments.
