Students know more than they should about many topics and are so behind in others. Many students lack comprehension skills, but they can figure out how to add a proxy to their Chromebook to play unblocked games or access social media. They are skilled at \"rage-baiting\" each other and teachers. One student even shared with me, \"Last year, we made Ms.____ cry!\" I told him that he seemed proud of that. He told me that he wasn't, but said, \"You have to admit it's an accomplishment.\"\r\n\r\nThey do say that it is always darkest before the dawn, and your generous donation was my dawn. Knowing that there are kind, like-minded humans out there really gave me the boost I needed to finish this year strong. \r\n\r\nStudents were so excited for the brand-new book smell when they opened their copy of Phantom. I read aloud to them, they read in pairs, and we had lively discussions about the book. We made idiom mini-posters with illustrated literal and figurative meanings. Chromebooks were left in backpacks and replaced with \"old school\" experiences that deepened students' learning and love of literature.","fullyFundedDate":1768602307422,"projectUrl":"project/teaching-students-to-think-without-ai-ov/10020223/","projectTitle":"Teaching students to think without AI Overview","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bugni","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10404229"},{"teacherId":10399143,"projectId":10028671,"letterContent":"It is with a very full heart that I write to say thank you for donating the hardback books for our Book Club this year. As a public school teacher, I have spent hundreds of dollars on my classroom this year, and always buy some new books for this unit because I know I have many students who have never held a brand new book in their hands before.\r\n\r\nTo have the opportunity for each student to crack open a brand new book has been an amazing experience for so many of them. I actually had one student say, \"I didn't know that new books had such a great smell to them!\" They were so excited to know that they could each keep their own copies during the unit, and could actually take them home. I walked into the cafeteria one morning to see that at least three of my students were actually reading instead of playing on their Chromebooks. That hardly ever happens.\r\n\r\nSo many middle schoolers now look to their screens for all of their entertainment. The fact that they each had a new book of their own on hand all the time, meant--for many of them--that they could actually shut their computers and \"visit\" someplace else that they would never go to in real life, and \"experience\" things they may never have in real life--all because they read it in the books you so graciously donated. \r\n\r\nThank you from the bottom of my heart. When the supplies arrived, my students were immediately excited. Many of them had never held a crochet hook or worked with yarn before. There was a lot of curiosity, a few laughs, and even some frustration at first, but that quickly turned into determination. We started with simple stitches, and it was incredible to watch students help each other, celebrate small successes, and stay focused longer than I typically see in a classroom setting. One of my favorite moments was watching a student who usually struggles to stay engaged proudly show off their first completed piece; it was a small square, but the sense of accomplishment was huge.\r\n\r\nSince then, we've been using the materials regularly to build skills and confidence. Students are currently working on small projects like scarves and simple creations they can personalize, and they're already asking about more advanced designs. Beyond learning crochet, they've created a calm, supportive space where they can relax, talk, and connect with one another in a positive way. Moving forward, we plan to continue building on these skills and eventually work toward a group project where students can create items to give back to others. Your donation has made all of this possible, and it has had a bigger impact than you might imagine, not just on their skills, but on their confidence and sense of community.\r\n\r\nThank you again for making this experience possible for our students.\r\n\r\nSincerely,","fullyFundedDate":1766764188449,"projectUrl":"project/crotchet-supplies/9861378/","projectTitle":"Crotchet Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kaiser","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10259480"},{"teacherId":10398522,"projectId":9988783,"letterContent":"Your contribution of a class set of The Phantom Tollbooth has had a powerful impact on my students this year and will continue to do so in the coming years as well. Advanced ELAR students were challenged by the novel's figurative language (especially idioms and puns) and built deeper reading comprehension skills through that challenge. We broke down the names of characters such as The Humbug and Princesses Rhyme and Reason for further context and characterization. Students also engaged in classroom discussions, assessments, and mini-projects throughout the three weeks we spent reading. \r\n\r\nStudents were encouraged to read outside of class at home and several parents reached out to express their delight watching their children read at night. Students also signed up for reading days during our in school study hall periods, and they enjoyed the final reading day in class by building \"reading forts\". I am delighted to share that they read for an entire hour that day which is a significant leap in their reading stamina compared to the beginning of the school year. \r\n\r\nOnce done, students completed a survey about The Phantom Tollbooth and 21 out of 26 students answered that the book was challenging but engaging and they would recommend it to a friend. \r\n\r\nYour generous donation made all of this possible and has encouraged me to expand our novel unit to two whole class novels in the coming 2026-2027 school year. \r\n\r\nThank you again for supporting our students, classroom, and school with your kindness. I am excited to plan another novel unit over the summer and look forward to yours and other donor's continued support for our children's education.","fullyFundedDate":1768494020157,"projectUrl":"project/book-club-novels-for-advanced-elar/9988783/","projectTitle":"Book Club Novels for Advanced ELAR","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Scalf","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10398522_orig.jpg?crop=1291,1291,x67,y355&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1768255786932","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10398522"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_94628","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":978,"numTeachers":73,"percentFrplEligible":9,"percentAsian":70,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":12,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":5,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":88.9,"schoolId":94628,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Pat & Katherine Fowler Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Pat & Katherine Fowler Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/frisco-independent-school-district/fowler-middle-school/94628"}
