Students truly struggle with the columns and rows in a spreadsheet software if they have never had any experience using them. In comes Battleship and they truly gain understanding of the columns and rows in our lessons. You are to thank for that. \r\n\r\nMy students were so excited to get to use the Lego SPIKE set. My Entrepreneur students created a prototype \"toy\" they had to pitch to the class. Then, the class voted as to who had the best toy and best pitch. Every day we do a reading activity where students are to read a brief article, write down words they do not know, write down key phrases that will help them develop a one sentence summary of the article. We call it STING. It has been eye opening to me as their teacher to discover words my students did not know. Because most of my students are bi-lingual, there are many English words I took for granted that everyone knew. So, because of the writing and reading every day, we are building vocabulary, getting better at sentence flow, and developing habits of reading for fun. My students were so excited to gather data on our ecocolumns project and make real world connections to what we had been learning about. Several of my students mentioned that the data they collected made our class feel more like an upper level science course and others mentioned that they felt like they better understood jobs in water quality and agriculture!\r\n\r\nSince the arrival of our vernier sensors, I have been able to take steps to creating a more dynamic and interactive learning space both inside and outside the classroom. They have allowed us to conduct experiments and inquiry activities that were previously beyond our reach.\r\n\r\nWhen you give students hands-on activities, it helps to activate curiosity (a HUGE motivator!). My students are more eager to participate in experiments and explore scientific concepts that are typically seen as \"boring\" when simply going through lectures & notes. Students understand concepts on a deeper level and leave a lasting impact and fond memories of science.\r\n\r\nWe were able to take \"field trips\" out to a nearby park and I was able to send out groups with different sensors to gather data and come back to share what they found with the class. It was so fun to hear how they had explored different areas and had so many observations! They have said that those were their favorite classes this year. \r\n\r\nMy hope is to include more and more activities in the future so that I can inspire my students to fall in love with science.
