The students have had fun learning about what he needs. They spend time reading stories to him during reading time.\r\n*We have planted the sunflowers. We researched what they need to grow and lifecycles. We are patiently waiting for them to grow. \r\n*We have used our new magnifying glasses and bug sets to learn about parts of different types of insects and to compare them to bugs that we see outside.\r\n*The magnetic blocks have challenged students to create environments and cities. They are using their imaginations to create stories for each thing that they create. An adult that is passionate about reading and uses inflection gets the students excited about reading by bringing the story to life. \r\n\r\nDuring early childhood read alouds teachers are guiding students through the early concepts of reading and writing. They are able to be themselves and stay engaged with learning. They were thrilled to see (and learn) about how things work. I was able to show them how air can affect seats (the fruits 'grew' to the right size), as well as how air can blow things up to work. I explained that these new toys and supplies were gifts that belonged to all of us and it was up to us to make sure everything was taken care of properly. \r\nMy project goal was to use materials to meet the sensory needs of my students so they would be ready for instruction. The materials also provide a backdrop for so many instructional opportunities! The platform swing has been wonderful in helping to regulate both bodies and emotions. We read social stories and practice breathing techniques while on the swing. Sensory bottles are fun to play with and watching the different materials float around help to slow down breathing and regain control of big emotions when needed. Sensory bins give input through sight, touch and sound and are always a favorite. Every item that was donated has also been helpful in offering opportunities to practice vocabulary, communication skills, imaginative play and turn taking.
