We've already finished reading The Secret Life of Bees, and it turned out to be a wonderful novel for teaching the elements of fiction. We studied everything from plot and setting to characterization, conflict, symbolism, and theme. Students learned to look beyond what happens in a story and think about why the author made certain choices. One of the things I especially enjoyed was hearing several of my girls say how much they loved reading a book with a female main character. For students who often see reading as a chore, comments like that mean a lot!\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom isn't just about finishing chapters. We discuss characters and their decisions, examine important passages, make inferences, and practice supporting our ideas with evidence from the text. Having enough copies for everyone makes a difference because students can follow along, go back to specific passages, and take a more active role in our lessons.\r\n\r\nI know not every student will become an avid reader, but if I can help them find even one book they genuinely enjoy, I consider that a win.
