Many young learners struggle to regulate their emotions, remain focused during instruction, transition between activities, or communicate their needs appropriately. Sensory tools such as a sensory tent, handheld sensory items, and spin chairs have had a tremendous impact on creating a supportive, inclusive, and successful learning environment for our students. These materials are not simply \"toys\" or optional classroom extras — they are essential tools that help students access their education in meaningful ways.\r\n\r\nThe sensory tent quickly became one of the most valuable spaces within our classroom. Many of our students experience sensory overload throughout the school day due to noise, movement, lights, and the constant stimulation of a busy classroom environment. The tent provides a calm, safe space where students can regulate their bodies and emotions without feeling punished or isolated. Instead of escalating into meltdowns, crying, or unsafe behaviors, students are able to independently choose the sensory tent as a coping strategy. Over time, we have seen students develop stronger self-awareness and begin identifying when they need a break before reaching a point of frustration. This has significantly reduced disruptive behaviors and increased the amount of time students are able to successfully participate in classroom learning.\r\n\r\nHandheld sensory items have also had a major impact on student engagement and focus. Many ECSE students learn best when they are able to move or receive sensory input while listening and participating. Items such as textured fidgets, pop tubes, sensory balls, and stretchy toys help students regulate their sensory needs in ways that are appropriate and non-disruptive. Instead of leaving their seats, crawling under tables, or becoming distracted by the environment around them, students are better able to remain engaged during circle time, small groups, and academic instruction. We have noticed increased attention spans, improved participation, and more successful peer interactions when students have access to sensory supports that meet their individual needs.\r\n\r\nOne particularly meaningful impact has been seen with students who struggle with anxiety, communication delays, or emotional regulation. For some children, sensory items provide comfort and predictability during difficult moments. A student who may otherwise cry or shut down during transitions can hold a calming sensory item and successfully move to the next activity. Another student who struggles to communicate frustration may use a preferred sensory tool to self-soothe rather than engage in unsafe behaviors. These supports allow students to feel successful, safe, and understood within the classroom environment.\r\n\r\nSpin chairs have also been incredibly beneficial for our students with high sensory needs. Many young children crave movement as a way to regulate their bodies and maintain focus. The spin chairs provide safe vestibular input that helps students calm their nervous systems and prepare their bodies for learning. We have seen students who previously struggled to sit for even a few minutes become more regulated and attentive after short sensory breaks using the spin chairs. These tools have improved students' ability to participate in teacher-led instruction, interact positively with peers, and complete classroom tasks with greater independence.\r\n\r\nBeyond the academic benefits, these sensory supports have strengthened our entire classroom community. Students are learning that everyone has different needs and that using tools to help our bodies and brains is both normal and encouraged. The classroom environment has become more positive, supportive, and inclusive because students are provided with strategies that help them succeed rather than being disciplined for behaviors connected to sensory dysregulation.\r\n\r\nThe impact of these sensory materials extends far beyond individual moments of calm or engagement. They help build foundational skills in self-regulation, independence, communication, and emotional awareness that students will carry with them throughout their educational journey. By providing sensory supports in the ECSE classroom, donors are directly helping students access learning, develop confidence, and experience success in school environments that can otherwise feel overwhelming. These tools empower our youngest learners to grow academically, socially, and emotionally while ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive.","fullyFundedDate":1770413062120,"projectUrl":"project/big-feelings-big-support-in-ecse/10053300/","projectTitle":"Big Feelings, Big Support in ECSE","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Amanda","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10416356"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_12770","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":456,"numTeachers":32,"percentFrplEligible":70,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":7,"percentWhite":52,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":30,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":2,"percentMultiracialImputed":6,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"14.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":85.7,"schoolId":12770,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Marti Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Marti Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/cleburne-independent-school-district/marti-elementary-school/12770"}
