We have been meeting during lunch since last semester. Although we are a small bunch, we have been having wonderfully inspired conversations about girls and women in fiction as well as in biographies. We started our club reading Ban This Book, which gave us a wonderful opportunity to discuss how a Mighty Girl can learn to use her voice to advocate for herself and others and to respectfully challenge ideas and systems that are unfair. The book also gave us a chance to talk about the power of literacy and the freedom to read.\r\n\r\nOur Mighty Girls read the second book, Ways to Make Sunshine, on their own over the winter break. When students returned to campus, we had an opportunity to discuss questions and themes that came up during their independent reading. Over the next couple of months, we read biographies of women and girls who made an impact and/or overcame adversity to succeed. This was the perfect segue into our current reading of Rosie Revere and the Raucous Riveters. The Mighty Girls are thoroughly enjoying her persistent attitude and how she demonstrates a growth mindset through all her \"Fabulous Flops.\" It has been my privilege to watch these girls grow as readers and as thinkers as members of our Mighty Girls Book Club.","fullyFundedDate":1761946161817,"projectUrl":"project/mighty-girls-mighty-readers/9791483/","projectTitle":"Mighty Girls / Mighty Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Garcia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3619032_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1480555028629","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/zavalalibrary"},{"teacherId":3542896,"projectId":10003711,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our classroom project. Because of your kindness, we were able to get materials that are already making a big difference in our students' learning. The materials you provided are helping students build important fine motor skills, like writing, cutting, and using classroom tools. Through hands-on activities, students are improving their control and coordination while also growing more confident in what they can do. It has been wonderful to see them enjoy using these fun and helpful materials.\r\nStudents are also using them to practice counting, sorting, recognizing letters, and early writing skills. Because the activities are hands-on, students are able to learn in a more natural and engaging way. They are learning through play and exploration, which helps them understand concepts better.\r\nOne of the best parts has been how excited the students are. They look forward to using the materials every day. This excitement helps create a positive classroom where students feel successful and ready to learn. These moments are so important in helping them build a love for learning.\r\nYour generosity has done so much more than provide supplies. It has helped create opportunities for growth, confidence, and joy in learning. The skills students are building now will continue to support them in the future.\r\nThank you for believing in my students and for supporting our classroom. Your donation has truly made a difference, and we are very grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1768927474895,"projectUrl":"project/tiny-hands-at-work-building-literacy-in/10003711/","projectTitle":"Tiny Hands at Work: Building Literacy in Pre-K","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Garza","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3542896_272x272.png?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1538589651027","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3542896"},{"teacherId":10324721,"projectId":9848962,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for contributing to this project. In addition to documenting their work, my fourth graders have already used the tablet during their self-portrait art projects by working from a photograph.\r\n\r\nSome students have showed interest in using it for a graphic design project. Some pulled out the socks and jumped for joy! I was also able to get some books for them. I was sneaky about finding out their favorite books to read and purchasing those exact books. I have never seen students SO excited about opening a gift. They loved it! I also used a bit of my own money and time to make some handmade quilts to send home with the socks, books, and snacks. The mirrors have helped my students understand how sounds are formed in their mouths and also use them to see if the letter sound they are saying is a vowel or a consonant (consonants are sounds that close the mouth and are blocked by the tongue teeth or lips. Vowels open the mouth and are voiced).\r\n The little colored chips have been beneficial when it comes to sounding out words and using them for orthographic mapping for spelling. They also are useful for phonemic awareness activities such as deleting initial, medial, or final sounds. Even though those activities are auditory, the chips help them visualize where in the word the sound is going away so they can produce the new word. (e.g.., say tiger, now say tiger without the /g/. the new word is tire). \r\nThe hand2mind Advancing Phonics Word Work Small Group Set has helped them with word building activities. They really love this hands on activity and leaves out the frustration of always having to write out the words. They can build them. We often play games where I have them find the sounds to build a word and then have them replace a letter to make a new word. One of the fourth grade classes chose A Rover's Story to read together while the other chose Felice and the Wailing Woman. Both classes were able to engage in shared reading of their chosen books. Lots of critical thinking and questioning took place during these readings. The students were able to make connections to other stories that they had heard or read previously. We also took notes and drew in the book as images, questions, and thoughts came up. Because their homeroom teachers were involved, the students were also able to read and engage outside of the library. The fact that each student will be keeping their book to enjoy over and over again added to their excitement.\r\n\r\nAs a bonus, the students were able to receive a different book to read over the some. This was a total surprise to both classes. One of the classes were surprised to receive The Lost Library and the other received The Cursed Moon. I know that the students will be able to apply some of the techniques we used to read the book, which will help prevent some of the summer slide that so many students experience.
