It is such a simple tool, but an effective (and fun!) way for the kids to stay engaged and work hard during our reading time. Today was the day of our big \"bake-off\" that my students have been anticipating for weeks. Students who rarely are engaged in class showed up with mixing bowls and wooden spoons in their backpacks! \r\n\r\nWe have been practicing doing ratios and converting measurements and we've also talked about chemical reactions and physical properties, but today they learned so much more than that. Folktales are part of our required curriculum, but now we get to explore them in a format that is both engaging and culturally meaningful. Our students are diving into these graphic novels with enthusiasm—not just because they love the genre, but because they see themselves and their families reflected in the stories. It's powerful to witness students light up when they recognize a tale they've heard from a grandparent or when they share connections in both Spanish and English.\r\n\r\nWe've been using The Dragon Slayer to build comprehension strategies like theme, character analysis, and comparing different cultural folktales. At the same time, we're engaging in deep conversations about storytelling traditions, identity, and how illustrations work alongside text to create meaning.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom looks like discussion, joy, and student voice at the center. Students gather in small groups, graphic novels in hand, excitedly flipping pages, asking questions, and sharing laughter or insight as they read. One of my students, who often hesitates to speak during whole-class discussions, confidently shared his thoughts on what makes a hero in these stories.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this experience possible. Your generosity has brought both representation and excitement into our classroom. One student said \"Miss, did you buy these for us\"? After calming the class down from the excitement of their new gear and with a smile on my face, I told the students \"there are people in the United States that wanted you all to look as well as you play, they donated these supplies to you for all your hard work\".\r\n\r\nI can say that because they feel more like a team, they have taken pride in themselves as leaders and understand that it's not just when they adorn the gear that was donated that they uphold that expectation during the entire school day and when possible, in the community.
