When the boxes with our new calm-down materials and sensory tools first arrived, my students were overcome with excitement. Their eyes lit up as we unboxed everything, and several students immediately asked if they could try out the quiet workspace setup and sensory tools right away. For students with emotional disabilities, feeling heard and supported makes a world of difference, and seeing brand-new resources dedicated entirely to their well-being brought an incredible sense of comfort and pride to our classroom.\r\n\r\nWe are integrating these resources daily as part of our emotional regulation and self-advocacy lessons. Recently, during a challenging independent writing activity that usually triggers high frustration, one of my students recognized their rising anxiety and independently chose to step over to our newly equipped calm space. Using the sensory resources to reset, they were able to return to their desk ready to learn and successfully complete their assignment without a breakdown, a major breakthrough for their personal growth and confidence.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our next step is to continue building our daily emotional toolkits using these resources. Students are currently learning to identify their specific triggers and select the exact sensory tool or strategy that helps them reset best.
