Reading is a huge part of our day, and having engaging, high-interest books helps my fourth graders see reading as something to enjoy, not just another assignment. We use books to practice important skills such as identifying character traits, determining theme, making inferences, analyzing cause and effect, learning new vocabulary, and supporting our thinking with evidence from the text.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading happens in many different ways. Students have opportunities to read independently, but we also read and discuss texts together. Some of our best conversations happen when we stop during a story to make predictions, talk about a character's choices, or connect something we are reading to our own experiences. These books also give us wonderful mentor texts that we can use during our reading and writing lessons.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things has been seeing students get excited about the new books and ask when we are going to read them. Even students who do not always consider themselves readers are more willing to participate when a book catches their interest. Thank you so much for helping me put books into my students' hands that make them want to read, talk, think, and learn.
