Because it is set in the 19th century, the language and situations of the characters are a whole new world for them. We've done a little research on the Columbian Exhibition/Chicago World's Fair, and we learned about all the new inventions and ideas that were on display. We have just begun reading, but already we have discussed the various idioms that were in popular usage at the time. We also had a fun scavenger hunt through the novel looking for examples of figurative language. I appreciate that my students are getting the opportunity to ENJOY reading!!\r\n\r\nAs you can see in our photos, the students are reading in pairs or small groups. I overheard some of the students making voices for each of the characters!
