My students and I are truly grateful for the opportunity to bring hands-on science learning to life in such an exciting way.\r\n\r\nWe will be using the new materials to explore how plants can grow without soil and to better understand the needs of living things. Students had helped me set up the hydroponics system, observing root growth, checking water levels, and discussing how nutrients help plants survive last year. One special classroom moment was when students noticed the first signs of growth and excitedly began comparing the plants' progress from day to day. It turned into a wonderful discussion about responsibility, patience, and the science behind plant development and I am excited we can continue to do this activity next academic year also.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, their faces lit up with excitement. When we set up the hydroponics last year, many of my students had never seen a hydroponics system before, and they immediately began asking thoughtful questions like, \"How will the plants grow without dirt?\" and \"Can we eat what we grow?\" Their enthusiasm showed just how meaningful these resources are for sparking learning and discovery.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue growing these plants, recording observations, measuring growth, and learning how variables such as light, water, and nutrients affect plant health. Students will also use what they learn to make connections to sustainability, food production, and real-world problem solving.\r\n\r\nBecause of your kindness, my students are able to experience science in a hands-on, memorable way. They have plucked tomatoes off of a plant and popped them in their mouth to eat fresh, they are now growing peppers and broccoli! They are having a blast! The 1st round of seeds was all herbs for our spaghetti; we did that 1st so they could grow and be cut and dried and ground up for later use. Our 2nd round was tomato seeds for 3 different types of tomatoes. They came in after christmas break and found that their seeds had turned into giant plants that we immediately had to transpant! Today they started peas. They are going to do cucumbers next because they say they want to make pickles (most have never done this and didn't realize that cucumbers were how to do it)! I can't wait to show them how to pickle watermelon rinds! \r\n\r\nThe students want us to try our hand at raising chickens next, for eggs because I am NOT about to kill chickens and pluck them, but I have to get approval from the principal 1st. In the mean time, they are absolutely loving growing their food!
